CBCT scan in Dubai — when a 3D dental scan is needed and how it compares with a panoramic X-ray
Patients are often told they need a “3D scan” and wonder whether it is necessary, safe and how it differs from the usual panoramic X-ray. Understanding its role helps you make an informed choice.

A CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scan is a 3D dental X-ray that shows teeth, roots, jaw bone, nerves and sinuses in cross-section. It is used when 2D X-rays are not enough — for example implant planning, impacted wisdom teeth, complex root canals or jaw problems. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, CBCT/3D imaging is available on site, and general dentist Dr. Fariba Alnoory explains when it is genuinely needed.
Key facts
- CBCT shows teeth and jaws in 3D
- Used for implants, wisdom teeth and complex cases
- Higher dose than a panoramic X-ray, far lower than medical CT
- Panoramic X-ray gives a 2D overview
- Taken only when clinically justified
What a CBCT scan is
A CBCT scanner rotates around your head once, usually in well under a minute, while you stand or sit still. It captures many images that a computer combines into a 3D model of your teeth and jaws. The dentist can then view thin slices in any direction, measure bone height and width accurately, and see the exact position of nerves, sinuses and roots. Unlike a medical CT scan, a dental CBCT is designed specifically for the jaws and face, the machine is smaller and open, and the field of view can be limited to the area of interest, such as one jaw or a few teeth.
When a CBCT scan is needed
CBCT is not a routine check-up X-ray; it is used when the extra detail will change treatment decisions. Common reasons include planning dental implants (bone volume and nerve or sinus position), assessing impacted wisdom teeth that appear close to the nerve, investigating root canal problems such as extra canals, cracks or persistent infection, evaluating cysts or unusual lesions, locating impacted canines, and assessing the jaw joints, airway or bone for orthodontic or surgical planning. If a standard X-ray gives enough information, a CBCT is usually unnecessary. Your dentist should explain the specific question the scan will answer.
Radiation dose and safety
All X-rays involve some radiation, so the guiding principle is to keep the dose as low as reasonably achievable while getting the information needed. A dental CBCT generally involves a higher dose than a single panoramic or small intraoral X-ray, but considerably lower than a conventional medical CT scan of the head. Using a smaller field of view and appropriate settings reduces the dose further. Scans are only taken when clinically justified. If you are or might be pregnant, tell the team beforehand; non-urgent scans are usually postponed. Children are scanned only when there is a clear clinical reason.
CBCT versus panoramic X-ray
A panoramic X-ray (OPG) produces a single flat image of the whole mouth — teeth, both jaws and sinuses — and is excellent for an overview: spotting decay patterns, bone levels, impacted teeth and lesions. However, structures overlap and measurements can be distorted, and it cannot show bone width or the exact position of a nerve relative to a root. CBCT adds the third dimension, which is why it is preferred for implant planning and complex surgery. Often a panoramic X-ray is taken first, and CBCT is added only if the 2D image raises a question that needs 3D detail. Both are interpreted by your dentist alongside the clinical examination.
CBCT at Manhal and what affects the price
At Manhal Medical Center, Office 101, SMJ1 Building, central Dubai, CBCT/3D imaging is available on site, so scans can be taken and reviewed with you during the same visit. Dr. Fariba Alnoory, a general dentist with more than 14 years of experience, explains whether a panoramic X-ray or CBCT is appropriate; scans for implant or surgical planning are reviewed by the treating specialist. The cost depends on the type of scan (panoramic or CBCT), the field of view and whether a written report is needed. Insurance may cover imaging that is medically necessary. Call +971 4 328 4560 to ask about imaging.
A check-up is a full examination of teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues. Problems found early are simpler, quicker and less costly to treat.

The scan itself usually takes less than a minute; positioning takes a few minutes more.
Do I need a CBCT for every implant?
In most implant cases a 3D scan is used to measure bone and locate nerves and sinuses safely.
Can I get a CBCT scan while pregnant?
Non-urgent scans are usually postponed; always tell the team if you are or may be pregnant.
What affects the price of a panoramic X-ray or CBCT?

I had an excellent experience with Dr. Fariba. She is an amazing dentist—very professional, gentle, and caring. She took the time to explain every step of the treatment and made sure I felt comfortable throughout the procedure. Her clinic is clean, modern, and welcoming, and her staff are always friendly and helpful. I'm very happy with the results and truly appreciate her attention to detail. I highly recommend Dr. Fariba to anyone looking for a skilled and compassionate dentistDr Fariba is the one dentist I keep going back to, because she is honest, kind, gives advice on making teeth last…Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
