Veneer shades BL1, BL2, BL3 and BL4 — choosing a natural white
Shade is one of the most searched veneer questions — “BL3 vs BL4”, “is BL1 too white?”. A shade that looks perfect on a screen can look very different under daylight and next to your face.

BL1 to BL4 are the “bleach” shades at the whitest end of the dental shade guide: BL1 is the brightest and BL4 is the softest of the four, still whiter than most natural teeth. The right veneer shade depends on your skin tone, eye whites, age, gum colour and how natural you want to look. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee helps you choose by trying shades in your own mouth before anything is made.
Key facts
- BL1 is the brightest bleach shade; BL4 the softest
- All BL shades are whiter than most natural teeth
- A good guide: not much brighter than your eye whites
- Porcelain will not whiten later — choose carefully
- A trial smile shows the shade on your own face
What the BL bleach shades mean
Dental shade guides group tooth colours by hue and brightness. Natural teeth usually fall in the A, B, C and D groups, such as A1 or B1, which are the lighter natural shades. The BL shades were added to describe teeth that are whiter than any natural shade, originally for people who had whitened their teeth. BL1 is the brightest and most opaque-looking, BL2 is slightly softer, BL3 softer again and BL4 is the gentlest of the bleach shades, often described as a bright but more natural white. Different ceramic systems label shades slightly differently, so the same name can look a little different between materials, which is why physical shade tabs matter more than the label.
BL1 vs BL2, BL3 vs BL4: how they look in real life
On a shade tab the differences between neighbouring BL shades look small, but across a full smile they become obvious. BL1 and BL2 give a very bright, high-value result that many people associate with a “Hollywood smile”; they can look striking in photos but may appear artificial in daylight, especially next to darker skin or lower teeth that are not veneered. BL3 and BL4 still look clearly white but reflect light more softly and blend more easily with natural features. Many patients who search “BL3 veneers too white” are really asking whether a whole smile at that shade will look natural, which can only be judged in the mouth.
Matching shade to skin tone, age and eye whites
A natural-looking shade is usually one that is not much brighter than the whites of your eyes. Skin tone, lip colour and gum colour all change how white a tooth appears: very bright veneers can look stark against deeper skin tones, while softer bleach shades or the lightest natural shades often look balanced. Age matters too, because natural teeth become slightly darker and more translucent over time; very bright, opaque veneers can look out of place on an older face. Your profession, how much you are photographed and personal taste are also valid factors. The goal is a confident, healthy-looking smile rather than the highest number on the guide.
How shade is chosen and tested
Shade selection is done in natural or colour-corrected light, with the teeth slightly moist and before the patient is tired from a long appointment. The dentist holds shade tabs next to the teeth, the lips and the eyes, and may take calibrated photographs for the laboratory. A trial smile, also called a mock-up, lets you see the planned shape and an approximate shade on your own teeth and in your own mirror. Digital scanning records the tooth shapes precisely so the laboratory can reproduce translucency at the edges and a more natural colour gradient from neck to tip. You can bring a trusted friend or family member to give an outside opinion.
Avoiding “too white” and keeping the smile consistent
If only the upper teeth are being veneered, the lower teeth should be considered, because a big contrast between a BL1 upper smile and darker lower teeth is very noticeable. Whitening the natural teeth first, and then matching the veneers to the new colour, often gives a more cohesive result. Remember that porcelain does not whiten later, so the colour you choose is the colour you keep, while natural teeth can still darken slightly. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee discusses these trade-offs, shows shade tabs in daylight and confirms the final shade with you in writing before the laboratory begins.
Veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front of the teeth. They change colour, shape and proportion with minimal preparation, and porcelain resists staining better than composite.

Is BL1 too white for veneers?
For many people a full smile in BL1 looks very bright and less natural, but some patients want that look. Seeing it in your own mouth is the best way to decide.
What is the difference between BL3 and BL4?
BL3 is slightly brighter than BL4. Both look clearly white; BL4 usually blends more easily with natural features.
Which veneer shade looks most natural?
Often BL4, BL3 or the lightest natural shades such as A1 or B1, depending on skin tone, age and the lower teeth.
Can I change the shade of porcelain veneers later?
No. Porcelain colour is fixed once made, so a different shade means making new veneers.
Should I whiten my teeth before veneers?
Often yes, especially if some teeth will not be veneered, so the veneers can be matched to the brighter natural teeth.

Should I get BL3 or BL4 veneers, and who can help me choose in Dubai?
BL4 is usually the softer, more natural-looking option and BL3 a little brighter; Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai helps patients compare them with shade tabs and a trial smile in daylight. The right choice depends on your skin tone, eye whites, age and lower teeth.
What does BL1 tooth shade mean and is it the whitest possible?
BL1 is the brightest shade on the standard bleach scale, and at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai Dr. Manhal Helfawee explains how it would look on your face before you commit. It is whiter than any natural tooth, so many patients choose a softer BL shade for a more natural look.
How do dentists match veneer colour to skin tone?
Dentists compare shade tabs against your teeth, lips, gums and eye whites in natural light; at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee also uses photographs and a mock-up so you can judge the shade on your own face. Softer shades usually suit deeper skin tones and older faces.
Will my bottom teeth look yellow if I get BL2 veneers on top only?
They may look noticeably darker if they are not whitened; Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai usually discusses whitening the lower teeth first and choosing an upper shade that blends. A large contrast between upper and lower teeth is one of the main reasons smiles look artificial.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staffAmazing service and very friendly team I'm very happy with my dental implant results with Dr.Manhal ❤️
