Skin blisters — causes, treatment and when blisters need a dermatologist
Blisters are fluid-filled bubbles under the skin. A blister on the heel after new shoes is easy to explain, but blisters that appear on their own, cover large areas or come with other symptoms can be worrying. Knowing what causes blisters and when to leave them alone helps you care for them safely.

Most skin blisters are caused by friction or minor burns and heal on their own if left intact and protected, but blisters that appear without a clear cause, keep recurring or spread widely may signal an allergic, infectious or autoimmune condition. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, specialist dermatologist Dr. Abdullah Anis diagnoses unexplained or recurrent blisters and arranges tests such as skin biopsy when needed.
Key facts
- Friction and minor burn blisters usually heal alone
- Leave blisters intact and protect them when possible
- Allergies, infections and medicines can cause blisters
- Unexplained blisters may need a skin biopsy
- Widespread blisters with fever need emergency care
Friction and heat blisters
Friction blisters form when skin is repeatedly rubbed, for example by new or tight shoes, sports equipment, tools or long walks in the heat. Sweat and heat make skin more prone to friction blisters, which is common in Dubai’s summer. Burn blisters occur after scalds, contact with hot surfaces, or sunburn, which can be severe in the UAE’s strong sun. The fluid inside the blister protects the healing skin underneath. Prevention includes well-fitting footwear, moisture-wicking socks, protective tape or padding on high-friction areas, and sun protection. Most friction and minor burn blisters heal within one to two weeks.
To pop or not to pop
In general, it is better not to pop a blister, because the intact skin acts as a natural dressing and lowers the risk of infection. Cover small blisters with a soft dressing or blister plaster and protect them from further rubbing. If a blister is large, very painful or likely to burst on its own, a doctor or nurse may drain it with a sterile needle, leaving the roof in place. If a blister bursts, gently clean it with water, do not peel off the loose skin, and cover it with a clean dressing. People with diabetes or poor circulation should seek advice rather than treating foot blisters themselves.
Allergic and infectious blisters
Some blisters are caused by allergic or irritant reactions, such as contact dermatitis from plants, metals, adhesives or chemicals, insect bites, or certain types of eczema that cause small, itchy blisters on the hands and feet. Infections can also cause blisters, including impetigo, a bacterial infection that leaves honey-coloured crusts, cold sores and genital herpes, chickenpox, shingles and hand, foot and mouth disease in children. Some medicines can cause blistering reactions. These need the right diagnosis, because treatment ranges from soothing creams to antibiotics or antivirals, and some reactions require stopping a medicine.
Autoimmune blistering diseases
Less commonly, blisters are caused by the immune system attacking proteins that hold the skin layers together. Bullous pemphigoid usually affects older adults and causes large, tense, itchy blisters, sometimes preceded by an itchy rash. Pemphigus causes fragile blisters that break easily and can affect the mouth, leaving painful erosions. Dermatitis herpetiformis, linked with coeliac disease, causes very itchy small blisters on the elbows, knees and buttocks. These conditions need specialist diagnosis with a skin biopsy and often special laboratory tests. Dr. Abdullah Anis’s fellowship in dermatopathology at St John’s Institute of Dermatology in London supports careful assessment of blistering disease.
When blisters need urgent care
Seek urgent medical help if blisters are widespread, appear suddenly with fever or feeling unwell, involve the mouth, eyes or genitals, or develop after starting a new medicine, as these may signal a serious drug reaction such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Large burns, burns on the face, hands, feet or genitals, and chemical or electrical burns also need emergency care. Signs of infection, such as spreading redness, warmth, pus, red streaks or fever, need prompt review. For recurring or unexplained blisters that are not an emergency, book an assessment with Dr. Abdullah Anis, a specialist dermatologist with more than 25 years of experience.
Eczema and psoriasis are chronic inflammatory skin conditions. Good control comes from an accurate diagnosis, a clear plan for flares, and daily skin care that suits the UAE climate.

Reasonable price and great location. Great experience so far I had my laser done and very happy with the result. So I decided to purchase another package :)Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staff
