Impetigo treatment — honey-crusted skin infection in children and adults
Parents often notice a small sore around a child's nose or mouth that turns into a golden, honey-coloured crust and then spreads to new spots within days. Impetigo is common in children, especially in warm weather, and it can also affect adults with eczema or broken skin.

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial skin infection that is usually treated with an antibiotic or antiseptic cream for small areas, or antibiotic tablets when it is widespread. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Specialist Dermatologist Dr. Abdullah Anis diagnoses impetigo, prescribes treatment and advises on school return and hygiene.
Key facts
- Golden, honey-coloured crusts are the typical sign
- Small areas: antiseptic or antibiotic cream
- Widespread impetigo: antibiotic tablets or syrup
- School return after healing or 48 hours of antibiotics, per advice
- Separate towels and hot washing reduce spread
What impetigo looks like
Impetigo is caused by common skin bacteria, usually Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus, entering through small breaks in the skin such as scratches, insect bites or eczema. The classic form begins as red spots or small blisters that burst and leave yellow-brown, honey-coloured crusts, most often around the nose, mouth and hands. A bullous form causes larger fluid-filled blisters that break and leave raw areas, more common in babies and young children. Impetigo can be itchy but is usually not very painful. It spreads easily by touching the sores and then other parts of the body or other people, which is why new patches often appear quickly.
Antibiotic and antiseptic treatment
For a few small patches, an antiseptic cream or a topical antibiotic cream applied for the recommended number of days is often enough. Gently softening and removing crusts with warm water before applying the cream helps the medicine reach the infection. When impetigo is widespread, bullous, recurrent or accompanied by feeling unwell, antibiotic tablets or syrup may be prescribed. Dr. Abdullah Anis chooses the treatment based on how much skin is affected, the child's age, any allergies and previous antibiotic use. Completing the full course matters, and a swab may be taken if the infection does not respond or keeps returning, to check which bacteria are present.
School exclusion and returning to nursery
Because impetigo is contagious, children are usually kept home from school or nursery until the sores have crusted over and healed, or until they have completed at least 48 hours of antibiotic treatment, depending on the advice given and the school's policy. Adults who work with food, young children or vulnerable patients may need similar time off. Your appointment can include a note explaining the diagnosis and expected return date. Telling the school allows staff to watch for cases in other children and remind classmates about handwashing. Keeping the child home for this short period protects classmates and younger siblings.
Hygiene to stop the spread at home
Keep the child's nails short and try to discourage scratching or picking at crusts. Wash hands with soap after touching the sores or applying cream. Use a separate towel and flannel for the affected person and wash them, along with bedding and clothing, at a hot temperature. Clean toys and shared surfaces regularly. Covering patches loosely with a dressing can reduce spread while still allowing the skin to breathe. If anyone else in the home develops similar sores, they should be checked too, because treating everyone affected at the same time reduces the chance of repeated infection.
Recurrent impetigo, eczema and red flags
Impetigo that keeps returning can be linked to eczema, nasal carriage of bacteria or untreated cases in the family. Dr. Abdullah Anis may treat the underlying eczema, take swabs and sometimes recommend measures to reduce bacterial carriage. Seek urgent medical care if the redness spreads quickly, the skin becomes hot, swollen and painful, the child develops fever or seems unwell, or if a newborn has blisters. Rarely, streptococcal skin infection can affect the kidneys, so dark or cola-coloured urine or puffiness around the eyes after impetigo needs prompt assessment. These signs are uncommon but should not be ignored.
Eczema and psoriasis are chronic inflammatory skin conditions. Good control comes from an accurate diagnosis, a clear plan for flares, and daily skin care that suits the UAE climate.

Is impetigo serious?
Impetigo is usually mild and responds well to treatment, but it is contagious and should be treated promptly to stop it spreading and to reduce rare complications.
How long is impetigo contagious?
It stays contagious until the sores have crusted and healed or until about 48 hours after starting antibiotics, depending on the treatment used.
Can adults get impetigo?
Yes. Adults can develop impetigo, especially if they have eczema, cuts, insect bites or close contact with an infected child.
Should I remove the crusts?
Gently softening crusts with warm water before applying cream can help, but avoid picking or scrubbing, which spreads the infection.
Why does my child keep getting impetigo?
Recurrent impetigo can be linked to eczema, bacteria carried in the nose or untreated family members. A dermatologist can look for and address these causes.

Reasonable price and great location. Great experience so far I had my laser done and very happy with the result. So I decided to purchase another package :)Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staff
