Neck Botox and the Nefertiti lift — softening neck bands and defining the jawline

Vertical cords in the neck and a softening jawline are common concerns from the late thirties onwards. Many people hear about the Nefertiti lift as a non-surgical alternative, but it suits some necks much better than others.

Neck Botox and the Nefertiti lift — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

Neck Botox relaxes the platysma muscle to soften vertical neck bands, and the Nefertiti lift places Botox along the jawline and neck to give a subtle lift and sharper jaw contour. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, a Specialist Dermatologist explains what results are realistic, as these treatments help muscle bands but not loose skin or fat.

Key facts

  • Softens vertical platysmal neck bands
  • Nefertiti lift subtly refines the jawline
  • Works best with good skin elasticity
  • Does not treat loose skin or fat
  • Results usually last three to four months

What causes neck bands

The platysma is a thin, sheet-like muscle that runs from the jaw and lower face down over the neck to the collarbones. With age, its edges can separate and contract more visibly, creating vertical bands that are especially noticeable when you speak, strain or grimace. The same muscle pulls downward on the lower face, which can contribute to jowling and a less defined jawline. Genetics, weight changes, sun damage and skin laxity all play a role. Horizontal neck lines, sometimes called necklace lines, have different causes and may need other treatments such as skin boosters.

How neck Botox works

Small amounts of botulinum toxin are injected into the visible platysmal bands at several points along each band. Relaxing these bands softens their appearance at rest and during movement. Because the platysma also pulls down on the jawline, reducing its activity can allow the muscles that lift the face to work with less opposition. Treatment takes about fifteen minutes. The dose is tailored to the strength and number of bands, and the injections are placed superficially to avoid the deeper muscles used in swallowing and neck movement. A review at around two weeks checks the result.

The Nefertiti lift

The Nefertiti lift, named after the Egyptian queen known for her elegant neck, combines injections along the lower border of the jaw with treatment of the neck bands. The aim is a subtle lift of the jowl area and a more defined jaw-to-neck angle. Results are modest and natural rather than dramatic. It works best in people with good skin quality, visible platysmal activity and minimal fat under the chin. It does not replace a surgical neck lift for significant sagging, and it does not treat a double chin caused by fat.

Who it suits and realistic results

Good candidates are typically in their thirties to fifties with visible neck bands and mild jawline softening but reasonable skin elasticity. People with heavy skin laxity, excess fat or deep horizontal lines usually see limited improvement from Botox alone, and other approaches may be discussed. The effect appears over one to two weeks and generally lasts about three to four months. Dr. Abdullah Anis examines your neck at rest and with movement, explains realistic expectations and may suggest combining treatment with skin-quality options where appropriate, so you can decide with clear information.

Safety and side effects

Neck Botox requires careful dosing and technique. Common effects include mild bruising, tenderness and temporary neck discomfort. Rarely, too much toxin or incorrect placement can cause neck weakness or difficulty swallowing, which needs urgent medical attention. For this reason, it should only be performed by a licensed doctor experienced in neck anatomy. Botox is avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and in certain neuromuscular conditions. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Abdullah Anis, Specialist Dermatologist & Venereologist with more than 25 years of experience, performs these treatments personally after a full assessment.

Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscles that create expression lines. When dosed carefully it softens lines while keeping natural movement.

No. It relaxes muscle bands; fat under the chin needs a different approach.

No. It can give a subtle improvement but does not tighten significantly loose skin.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
