Carbon laser peel in Dubai — for oily skin and pores, compared with chemical peels

People with oily skin and visible pores often hear about the carbon peel as a quick, low-downtime treatment before events. It can give a fresh appearance, but its effects are modest and it is not the right choice for every skin concern.

Carbon laser peel in Dubai — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

A carbon laser peel, often called the Hollywood peel, applies a thin layer of carbon to the skin and then uses a laser to heat and remove it, which can temporarily reduce oiliness and improve the look of pores and skin glow. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, a Specialist Dermatologist explains whether it suits your skin or whether a chemical peel, hydra-dermabrasion facial or CO2 laser is more appropriate.

Key facts

  • Carbon layer is heated and removed with a laser
  • May temporarily reduce oiliness and pore visibility
  • Little or no downtime
  • Effects are modest; sessions are usually repeated
  • Chemical peels are a well-established alternative

How a carbon laser peel works

A fine layer of carbon lotion is applied to clean skin and left to dry, during which it settles into the surface and pores. A laser, typically a Q-switched Nd:YAG type, is then passed over the skin. The carbon absorbs the laser energy and is broken up and removed, taking with it surface debris and some oil, while the gentle heat may stimulate the skin. Sessions usually take around thirty minutes. There is little or no downtime, which is why it is popular before events. Whether this treatment is currently offered at the clinic should be confirmed when booking.

What it can and cannot do

A carbon peel may temporarily reduce oiliness, make pores look less noticeable and give the skin a smoother, brighter appearance. Some people with mild acne find it helpful as a supportive treatment. Effects are generally modest and short-lived, so a series of sessions is usually needed to maintain results. It is not a treatment for deep acne scars, significant pigmentation such as melasma, active cystic acne or skin laxity. Evidence is more limited than for established treatments such as chemical peels and medical acne therapy, so expectations should be realistic.

Carbon peel versus chemical peels

Chemical peels use acids such as salicylic, glycolic or mandelic acid to exfoliate the skin chemically. Salicylic acid peels in particular penetrate oily pores and are well established for acne-prone skin, blackheads and post-acne marks. Chemical peels can be adjusted in strength and type for different concerns, while a carbon peel offers a more uniform, light treatment. Both have minimal downtime at superficial levels. For many people with oily, congested skin, a chemical peel combined with a good medical skincare routine provides comparable or greater benefit, which Dr. Abdullah Anis discusses with you.

Other options for oily skin and pores

Depending on your skin, alternatives may include a hydra-facial style deep-cleansing hydra-dermabrasion facial for congestion and surface refresh, medical skincare with retinoids or niacinamide to regulate oil, and fractional CO2 laser for textural concerns or acne scars, which involves more downtime but more significant resurfacing. Microneedling may help pore appearance and shallow scars. For oiliness linked to acne, prescription treatment is often more effective than procedures alone. The choice depends on your main concern, skin tone, budget and how much downtime you can accept, which Dr. Abdullah Anis reviews with you during consultation.

Safety and suitability

Laser treatments should be performed under medical supervision with appropriate eye protection. Temporary redness is common, and in darker skin tones there is a small risk of pigment changes, so settings must be chosen carefully. Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen after treatment, especially in Dubai's climate. Treatments are usually postponed during isotretinoin use, active infections or sunburn. Seek advice for blistering, persistent redness or pain. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Abdullah Anis, Specialist Dermatologist & Venereologist, assesses your skin and recommends the option most likely to help.

Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin in a controlled way, improving tone, texture, acne and pigmentation. The peel strength is chosen for your skin type and goals.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
