Shingles treatment in Dubai — the early antiviral window, nerve pain and prevention

Shingles often begins with burning, tingling or stabbing pain on one side of the body, followed a few days later by a band of red, blistering rash. Because the early pain can be confused with other problems, many people wonder what is happening until the rash appears, and acting quickly at that point makes a difference.

Shingles treatment in Dubai — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

Shingles is a painful, blistering rash caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, and antiviral treatment works most effectively when started as early as possible, ideally within about 72 hours of the rash appearing. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, specialist dermatologist Dr. Abdullah Anis diagnoses shingles, starts appropriate treatment and helps manage pain, with urgent referral when the eye or other high-risk areas are involved.

Key facts

  • Painful one-sided band of blisters
  • Antivirals work most effectively when started early
  • Pain may need nerve-specific medicine
  • Shingles near the eye needs urgent care
  • A vaccine can reduce the risk for many adults

What shingles is and who gets it

After chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus stays dormant in nerve cells for life. Shingles occurs when the virus reactivates and travels along a nerve to the skin. It is more common after the age of 50 and in people with weakened immunity due to illness, medicines such as steroids or immunosuppressants, or significant stress. The rash usually appears on one side of the body in a band or strip following a nerve, often on the chest, back, waist or face. It starts as red patches that develop into fluid-filled blisters, which crust over in about 7 to 10 days and usually heal within two to four weeks.

The early antiviral window

Antiviral medicines such as aciclovir, valaciclovir or famciclovir can reduce the severity and duration of shingles and may lower the risk of complications, including long-lasting nerve pain. They work most effectively when started early, ideally within about 72 hours of the rash appearing, so it is worth seeing a doctor promptly rather than waiting. Treatment may still be recommended after this window in some situations, such as when new blisters are still forming, the eye is involved, or the person has a weakened immune system. Dr. Abdullah Anis assesses the rash and your health to decide which treatment is appropriate.

Managing pain and skin care

Shingles pain can range from mild discomfort to severe burning or stabbing pain. Simple painkillers may help, and stronger or nerve-specific medicines are sometimes needed. Keep the rash clean and dry, wear loose cotton clothing, and use cool compresses for comfort. Avoid scratching or bursting blisters, which can lead to bacterial infection and scarring. Calamine-type lotions may soothe itching once blisters have crusted. Rest and good sleep help recovery. While the blisters are open, cover them and avoid contact with pregnant women who have not had chickenpox, newborn babies and people with weakened immunity, as the virus can cause chickenpox in them.

Post-herpetic neuralgia and complications

In some people, especially older adults, nerve pain continues for months after the rash has healed. This is called post-herpetic neuralgia and can affect sleep, mood and daily life. Early antiviral treatment and good pain control may reduce the risk, and specific medicines for nerve pain are available if it develops. Other complications include bacterial skin infection, scarring and pigment changes. Shingles near the eye can damage vision, and shingles around the ear can affect hearing or cause facial weakness. Shingles is also more extensive in people with weakened immunity. Dr. Abdullah Anis will explain what to watch for during recovery.

Warning signs and the shingles vaccine

Seek urgent medical care if shingles affects the forehead, eyelid or tip of the nose, if you have eye pain, redness or blurred vision, if there is facial weakness or ear pain, if the rash is widespread, or if you have a weakened immune system, high fever, confusion or severe headache. A recombinant shingles vaccine is recommended for many adults over 50 and for some younger adults with weakened immunity, as it can significantly reduce the risk of shingles and its complications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether the vaccine is suitable for you and where it is available in Dubai.

Eczema and psoriasis are chronic inflammatory skin conditions. Good control comes from an accurate diagnosis, a clear plan for flares, and daily skin care that suits the UAE climate.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
