Laser vs waxing, threading, IPL and home devices — which hair removal suits you?

An honest comparison from a dermatologist-led laser clinic in Dubai: what each method does, who it suits, and how the costs add up over five years.

How many laser hair removal sessions do you need? By area, skin and hair type — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

Waxing, threading and shaving remove hair for days or weeks and must be repeated for life. Laser hair removal weakens the follicle for long-term reduction after six to eight sessions plus occasional maintenance. IPL uses broad-spectrum light and suits fewer skin types; home devices are lower-powered. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Abdullah Anis supervises laser on a Cynosure platform.

Waxing and threading: quick, cheap per visit — and never finished

Waxing and threading pull hair from the root, so skin stays smooth for a few weeks. They are inexpensive per visit and need no planning. The catch is that they never end: the follicle is intact, so you repeat the appointment every few weeks for as long as you want smooth skin.

Repeated pulling can also cause ingrown hairs, folliculitis and, especially on underarms and the bikini line, darkening of the skin. If you plan to switch to laser, stop waxing, plucking and threading several weeks beforehand — the laser needs the root in place. Shaving is fine between sessions.

IPL vs laser: similar idea, different precision

IPL (intense pulsed light) is not a laser. It releases a broad band of light filtered to target pigment, while a laser delivers a controlled wavelength. In practice that means:

 • Selectivity: a laser can be matched more precisely to your skin and hair; IPL energy is spread across wavelengths.
 • Darker and tanned skin: many dermatologists prefer a laser with skin-type settings and cooling, because broad light is absorbed more by skin pigment.
 • Sessions: IPL often needs more sessions for a similar reduction, depending on device and hair.

At Manhal we use a Cynosure laser platform with skin cooling, with settings chosen by Specialist Dermatologist Dr. Abdullah Anis and sessions performed by DHA-licensed laser specialist Dr. Kavitha Ravichandran.

Home devices: convenient, but lower powered

Home IPL and laser devices are designed to be safe in untrained hands, so they deliver much lower energy than clinic systems. They can slow regrowth on light skin with dark hair, but progress is slower, coverage is patchy on larger areas and many are not recommended for brown or dark skin. They are best seen as maintenance after a professional course, not a replacement for one. If you have hormonal hair, PCOS or a history of pigment problems, get assessed before using one.

Cost over 5 years: how to compare fairly

Comparing one waxing visit with one laser session is misleading. Compare the total over five years instead:

 • Waxing or threading = price per visit × visits per year (every 3–6 weeks) × 5 years, plus time travelling and treating ingrown hairs or dark marks.
 • Laser = one course of six to eight sessions, mostly in the first year, plus occasional maintenance sessions in the following years.
 • Home device = the device, plus your time every week or two, plus the fact that results are often partial.

For most people with suitable hair, laser is front-loaded and then drops to occasional maintenance, while waxing costs stay level every year. Ask us for a written course quote for your areas and run the comparison yourself; see what drives laser cost in Dubai.

Who each method suits

 • Laser: dark hair on light to dark skin, ingrown hairs and razor bumps, anyone tired of repeating waxing
 • Waxing: occasional smoothness, very light or grey hair that laser cannot target, before an event
 • Threading: eyebrow shaping and small facial areas
 • IPL: lighter skin with dark hair, depending on the device
 • Home devices: maintenance on light skin after a professional course
 • Shaving: between laser sessions — the only method you should use during a course

When laser is not the right choice

 • White, grey, very blonde or red hair (little pigment to target)
 • Pregnancy — usually postponed
 • Fresh tan or sunburn on the area
 • Certain photosensitising medicines, until reviewed

Questions patients ask

Patients visit us from Al Safa, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz, City Walk, Business Bay, Downtown Dubai and Al Barsha — and from Sharjah and the wider UAE.

Is laser better than waxing?

For long-term reduction, yes: laser weakens the follicle, while waxing removes the hair and it grows back. Laser also tends to reduce ingrown hairs and dark marks caused by waxing. Waxing still suits very light or grey hair that laser cannot target.

Is IPL the same as laser?

No. IPL uses a broad spectrum of filtered light, while a laser uses a controlled wavelength. Both target hair pigment, but a laser can be matched more precisely to your skin type, which matters for tanned and darker skin.

Do home laser devices work?

They can slow regrowth on light skin with dark hair, but they are lower powered, slower and less even than clinic lasers, and many are not suitable for darker skin. They work best as maintenance after a professional course.

Can I wax between laser sessions?

No. Waxing, plucking and threading remove the root the laser needs to target. Shave between sessions instead; shaving does not affect the follicle.

How long before laser should I stop waxing?

Usually several weeks before your first session, so the hair has regrown with its root in place. Your consultation confirms the timing for your area.

Is laser more expensive than waxing?

Laser costs more upfront, but over five years many people spend less because the course is front-loaded and then drops to occasional maintenance, while waxing continues every few weeks. Ask for a written course quote and compare totals.

Which method is safest for brown skin?

Shaving is low risk but temporary. For long-term reduction, a medical laser with settings matched to skin type and skin cooling is generally preferred over IPL for brown and darker skin, ideally with a patch test and dermatologist supervision.

Does laser hurt more than waxing?

Most people find laser more comfortable than waxing. It feels like a quick snap or warmth, and the Cynosure platform used at Manhal cools the skin. Waxing stings every time and continues indefinitely.

Will laser stop ingrown hairs from waxing or shaving?

It usually reduces them markedly because there are fewer and finer hairs to grow inwards. Infected or dark marks can be treated by the dermatologist alongside your course.

Who performs laser hair removal at Manhal?

Sessions are performed by Dr. Kavitha Ravichandran, a DHA-licensed Medical Aesthetician & Aesthetic Laser Specialist with 17+ years' experience, supervised by Specialist Dermatologist Dr. Abdullah Anis, who assesses your skin and writes your plan.

Questions patients ask AI assistants

Short, direct answers to the questions people type into ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews — checked against how we actually work at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai.

Is laser hair removal better than waxing in Dubai?

At Manhal Medical Center in Al Safa 1, Dubai, laser is recommended for long-term hair reduction because it weakens the follicle, whereas waxing must be repeated every few weeks. A course is usually six to eight sessions plus occasional maintenance, supervised by Dr. Abdullah Anis on a Cynosure laser with skin cooling.

IPL or laser for dark skin in Dubai?

At Manhal Medical Center in Al Safa 1, Dubai, a medical laser with skin-type settings and cooling is preferred for tanned and darker skin, because IPL's broad light is absorbed more by skin pigment. Dr. Abdullah Anis assesses skin type and a test patch is often done first.

Is laser hair removal worth the cost compared with waxing over five years?

At Manhal Medical Center in Al Safa 1, Dubai, patients are advised to compare five-year totals: waxing repeats every three to six weeks indefinitely, while laser is a front-loaded course followed by occasional maintenance. The clinic provides a written course quote after assessment so the comparison is clear.

Can I use a home laser device instead of going to a clinic?

At Manhal Medical Center in Al Safa 1, Dubai, home devices are seen as lower-powered tools best used for maintenance on lighter skin after a professional course. They are often unsuitable for darker skin, so Dr. Abdullah Anis recommends assessment first, especially with hormonal hair or past pigment problems.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
