Bonding to close gaps between teeth — when bonding is enough and when orthodontics is better
A gap between the front teeth (diastema) or small spaces around the smile are among the most common reasons people ask about bonding. Bonding is quick, but it is not the right tool for every gap.

Composite bonding can close small gaps between teeth — typically a single gap of a millimetre or two, or several small spaces — by adding tooth-coloured resin to the sides of the teeth in one visit. Larger gaps, gaps caused by tooth position or bite problems, and gaps that are increasing are usually better treated with orthodontics, sometimes followed by bonding. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee assesses which approach suits your smile.
Key facts
- Bonding suits small, stable gaps
- Large gaps usually need orthodontics
- New or widening gaps may signal gum disease
- Tooth proportions guide how much to add
- Combining orthodontics and bonding is common
Why gaps appear between teeth
Gaps can form when teeth are small relative to the jaw, when a lateral incisor is undersized or missing, or when a large lip frenum (the band of tissue above the front teeth) holds the teeth apart. Habits such as tongue thrusting or thumb sucking in childhood can push teeth forward. In adults, new or widening gaps can be a sign of gum disease and bone loss, which allows teeth to drift and fan out. Missing back teeth can also cause front teeth to shift. Because the cause affects the solution, the first step is always to understand why the gap is there and whether it is stable.
When bonding is enough
Bonding works best when the gap is small, the teeth are otherwise well aligned, the bite is healthy, and adding width will keep the teeth in pleasing proportions. In that situation, resin is added to the side of one or both teeth next to the gap, shaped and polished so the teeth meet at a natural contact point. It is usually done in one visit with little or no removal of enamel and can be reversed or modified later. Spreading the added width across several teeth can help avoid making any single tooth look too wide. Bonding is also useful to refine small spaces after orthodontics.
When orthodontics is the better choice
If the gap is large, closing it with bonding alone would make the teeth look unnaturally wide or square. Orthodontic treatment — clear aligners or braces — moves teeth together and can redistribute space evenly, often producing a more natural result. Orthodontics is also preferable when gaps come with crowding elsewhere, protruding teeth, a deep bite, or when teeth have drifted because of gum disease (once the gums are stabilised). Sometimes the best plan combines both: orthodontics to position teeth correctly, then bonding to fine-tune shape or build up small lateral incisors. Retainers are needed afterwards to keep gaps from reopening.
Proportions, gums and the frenum
A natural smile depends on the width-to-length ratio of each tooth and how teeth relate to each other. Your dentist considers these proportions, often using digital scans or a trial mock-up, to show how the teeth would look with the gap closed by bonding. Gum health is checked: gaps caused by gum disease will reopen unless the gums are treated, and bonding near inflamed gums does not bond well. If a thick frenum is pulling the teeth apart, a minor procedure to release it (frenectomy) may be suggested, usually with orthodontic closure. Being clear about these factors helps prevent results that look bulky or relapse.
Planning with Dr. Manhal Helfawee
At Manhal Medical Center, Office 101, SMJ1 Building, central Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee, founder and medical director and consultant implantologist with more than 20 years in the UAE (DHA licence 00169366-001), plans cosmetic work including veneers, crowns and smile refinements. He measures the gaps, checks your gums, bite and tooth proportions, and explains honestly whether bonding alone will look natural, or whether orthodontic treatment — which the clinic’s orthodontic team can assess — should come first. You receive a written plan describing each step. Consultations are available in English and Arabic, daily from 11:00 to 20:00 (Saturday from 10:00).
Composite bonding shapes tooth-coloured resin directly onto the tooth to repair chips, close small gaps or even out edges. It usually needs little or no drilling and is completed in a single appointment.

How big a gap can bonding close?
Usually small gaps of around a millimetre or two per space; larger gaps risk making teeth look too wide.
Is bonding for gaps permanent?
It lasts several years with care but may need polishing, repair or replacement over time.
Can gaps come back after bonding?
If the cause, such as gum disease or tongue pressure, is not addressed, teeth may still move.
Does bonding a gap hurt?
It usually needs no anaesthesia because little or no enamel is removed.
Do I need a retainer after bonding?
Usually not after bonding alone, but a retainer is needed if orthodontics was used to close gaps.

Can composite bonding close the gap between my front teeth in Dubai?
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee often uses composite bonding to close small, stable gaps between front teeth in one visit. For larger gaps or gaps caused by tooth position, he may advise orthodontic treatment first.
Should I get bonding or Invisalign to close gaps in my teeth?
Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center, Dubai explains that bonding suits small gaps where teeth are well aligned, while aligners are better for larger gaps or when other teeth are crooked. Sometimes aligners are followed by bonding to refine the shape.
Why are gaps suddenly appearing between my teeth as an adult?
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee notes that new or widening gaps in adults can be linked to gum disease, bone loss or missing back teeth. These causes should be checked and treated before any cosmetic closure.
Will bonding make my teeth look too big if I close a gap?
Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai plans bonding around tooth proportions, sometimes spreading the added width over several teeth or using a mock-up first. If closing the gap would make teeth look too wide, orthodontics is usually recommended.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staffAmazing service and very friendly team I'm very happy with my dental implant results with Dr.Manhal ❤️
