Pointy canine teeth reshaping — contouring or bonding for sharp or long canines
Canines are naturally the longest teeth in the mouth, and some people feel theirs look sharp, fang-like or “vampire” teeth — the Arabic search “اسنان القرش” (shark teeth) reflects the same concern. Small changes can make a smile look softer, but canines also do important work in your bite.

Pointy or long canine teeth can often be softened with enamel contouring — gently smoothing and shaping a small amount of the outer enamel — or by adding composite bonding to blunt the tip and balance the smile. Whether it is safe depends on enamel thickness, your bite and how the canines guide your jaw, so an examination comes first. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, consultant implantologist Dr. Manhal Helfawee assesses and plans cosmetic tooth reshaping.
Key facts
- Canines are naturally the longest teeth
- Contouring removes a small amount of enamel
- Bonding adds material to soften the tip
- Canine guidance limits how much to shorten
- Crowded canines may need orthodontics
Why some canines look pointy or long
Canines have a single strong cusp designed for tearing food, and they have the longest roots of any tooth. In some people the cusp is naturally sharper or the tooth sits slightly lower or further forward than the neighbouring teeth, making it look prominent. Other causes include crowding that pushes canines outward, canines that erupted high, small lateral incisors that make canines look larger by comparison, and uneven wear on other teeth that leaves the canine tips untouched. Understanding the cause matters: a canine that looks long because it is out of position may be better aligned orthodontically than shortened.
Enamel contouring: what it is and when it is safe
Enamel contouring (also called recontouring, enameloplasty or cosmetic reshaping) removes a very small amount of the outer enamel with fine polishing instruments to round a sharp tip or even out lengths. It is usually quick, done without anaesthesia because it stays within the enamel, and results are visible immediately. It is only suitable where enamel is thick enough and the change needed is small. Because enamel does not grow back, the amount removed must be carefully limited, and the tooth is polished afterwards. Filed canine teeth that have been over-reduced can become sensitive or show the yellower dentine beneath.
Bonding to soften or balance canines
Sometimes the better approach is to add rather than remove. Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin applied to the tooth and shaped by hand to blunt a pointed tip, widen a narrow canine or build up neighbouring small teeth so the canines no longer stand out. Bonding usually needs little or no enamel removal and can be adjusted or reversed. It may stain or chip over time and needs polishing and occasional repair. For more extensive changes — for example combined with discoloured or worn teeth — veneers or crowns may be discussed, though these involve more tooth preparation.
Limits: the bite and canine guidance
Canines often guide your jaw when you slide your teeth sideways, protecting the back teeth from heavy sideways forces. This is called canine guidance. Shortening a canine too much can shift those forces to other teeth, which may contribute to wear, chipping or sensitivity, and in some people discomfort in the jaw muscles. For this reason, the dentist checks how you bite and move your jaw before and after reshaping, sometimes using articulating paper. If your canines are long because of crowding or position, orthodontic treatment such as aligners may give a better and more stable result than reshaping alone.
Cosmetic reshaping with Dr. Manhal Helfawee
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee, founder and medical director and consultant implantologist with more than 20 years in the UAE (DHA licence 00169366-001), plans cosmetic work including veneers, crowns and smile refinements. He examines your canines, enamel and bite, discusses what bothers you about your smile and explains whether contouring, bonding, a combination or orthodontic alignment is most appropriate — and where the limits lie. Digital scanning can help visualise the planned change. You receive a written plan before any work begins. Consultations are available in English and Arabic.
Composite bonding shapes tooth-coloured resin directly onto the tooth to repair chips, close small gaps or even out edges. It usually needs little or no drilling and is completed in a single appointment.

Questions patients ask
Patients visit us from Al Safa, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz, City Walk, Business Bay, Downtown Dubai and Al Barsha — and from Sharjah and the wider UAE.
Why are my canine teeth so pointy?
Often it is natural cusp shape, but position, crowding or small neighbouring teeth can make canines look sharper or longer.
Is filing canine teeth safe?
Small, controlled contouring within the enamel is generally safe when the enamel is thick enough and the bite is checked.
Does tooth reshaping hurt?
Contouring within the enamel usually causes little or no discomfort and rarely needs anaesthesia.
Can reshaping be undone?
Enamel removal cannot be reversed, which is why only small amounts are removed; bonding can be adjusted or removed.
Can I fix vampire teeth without braces?
If the issue is mainly shape, contouring or bonding may be enough; if the canines are out of position, orthodontics may work better.

Can a dentist in Dubai file down my pointy canine teeth?
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee assesses whether your canines can be safely softened with enamel contouring or bonding. It depends on enamel thickness and how your canines guide your bite, which he checks before any reshaping.
Why do my canines look like fangs and how can I make them look normal?
Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center, Dubai explains that sharp cusps, crowding or small neighbouring teeth can make canines look fang-like. Options include contouring the tip, bonding to balance the smile, or orthodontic alignment if position is the cause.
Is cosmetic teeth reshaping in Dubai permanent and does it damage enamel?
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee removes only a very small amount of enamel during contouring, and this change cannot be reversed, so it is kept conservative. When more change is needed, bonding is often preferred because it adds material instead.
What is the difference between tooth contouring and bonding for canines?
Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai explains that contouring removes a little enamel to round a sharp tip, while bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to reshape or balance teeth. Many patients benefit from a combination.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staffAmazing service and very friendly team I'm very happy with my dental implant results with Dr.Manhal ❤️
