Laughing gas for kids at the dentist — numbing, nitrous oxide and calm visits

Parents searching for laughing gas for children usually want to know whether it is safe and whether their nervous child really needs it. Many children manage well with good numbing and a calm, step-by-step approach, while others benefit from extra help.

Laughing gas for kids at the dentist — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is a mild inhaled sedative that helps some children feel relaxed during dental treatment; they stay awake and recover within minutes once it stops. It does not numb teeth, so local anaesthetic is still used for fillings. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Fariba Alnoory uses numbing gel, gentle local anaesthesia and child-friendly techniques; ask the clinic whether nitrous oxide is available for your child's visit.

Key facts

  • Numbing gel before a slow local anaesthetic reduces the pinch
  • Laughing gas relaxes children but they stay awake
  • Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes after oxygen
  • Medical history is reviewed before any sedation
  • General anaesthesia is not offered at the clinic; referral when needed

How children's teeth are numbed

For most fillings and crowns, the tooth is numbed with a local anaesthetic. First, a flavoured numbing gel is placed on the gum for a minute or two so the surface goes numb. The anaesthetic is then given slowly with a fine needle, which reduces the pinch most children notice. Doses are calculated by the child's weight. Dentists often use friendly language such as 'sleepy juice' and keep the syringe out of sight. After treatment, the lip, cheek and tongue stay numb for one to three hours, so parents should watch that children do not bite or chew them, and offer soft food once feeling returns.

What laughing gas is and how it works

Nitrous oxide is a gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small nose mask. Within a few minutes children usually feel relaxed, warm and a little floaty, and some feel tingling in their hands or feet. They remain awake, can talk, and can follow instructions, which is why it is described as minimal or light sedation. It helps reduce anxiety and the gag reflex, and can make longer treatment feel shorter. It is not a general anaesthetic and does not replace local anaesthetic. When the gas is switched off, the child breathes pure oxygen for a few minutes and the effects wear off quickly.

Safety and who it suits

When given by trained staff with proper equipment and monitoring, nitrous oxide has a long safety record in children's dentistry. It suits mildly to moderately anxious children who can tolerate a nose mask and breathe through their nose. It may not be suitable for children with a blocked nose or bad cold, certain lung conditions, some rare metabolic conditions, or recent ear surgery, and the dentist will review medical history first. A light meal a couple of hours before is usually advised to reduce nausea. Very young children, or those who cannot accept the mask, may need a different plan.

How we keep visits calm

Most children do well when they know what to expect. The dentist uses a tell-show-do approach, explaining each instrument simply, showing it, then using it. Short appointments, earlier in the day when children are fresh, tend to go better. Children can hold a toy, watch the ceiling, and use a raised hand as a stop signal they know will be respected. Praise for effort, not just results, builds confidence. Parents help by using positive words at home, avoiding phrases like 'it won't hurt', and not sharing their own dental fears. For very anxious children, treatment may be phased over several visits.

When more than laughing gas is needed

A small number of children with extensive decay, very young age, strong anxiety or additional needs may not be able to complete treatment in the chair even with gentle techniques. General anaesthesia is not offered at Manhal Medical Center, so in these situations the dentist explains options honestly, which may include stabilising teeth with fluoride or temporary fillings and referral to a hospital-based service for treatment under general anaesthesia. Any sedation beyond nitrous oxide is only arranged if the clinic confirms it is available and appropriate. Urgent symptoms such as facial swelling with fever should never wait for a planned sedation appointment.

Positive early visits shape a child's attitude to dentistry for life. We keep appointments short, explain everything in child-friendly language, and focus on prevention.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
