Pediatric crowns in Dubai — stainless steel and zirconia crowns for baby teeth

Parents are sometimes surprised to hear a crown suggested for a tooth that will eventually fall out. Baby molars often stay until around 10 to 12 years of age, so protecting them can matter for years of chewing, comfort and space for adult teeth.

Pediatric crowns in Dubai — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

Pediatric crowns are small caps placed over badly decayed or weakened baby teeth to protect them until the adult tooth is ready to come through. Stainless steel crowns are very durable for back teeth, while tooth-coloured zirconia crowns are often used where appearance matters. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Fariba Alnoory assesses whether a crown, a filling or another option suits your child's tooth.

Key facts

  • Protects badly decayed or weakened baby molars until they fall out
  • Stainless steel: very durable, single visit, silver colour
  • Zirconia: tooth-coloured, needs more preparation and good cooperation
  • Often placed after a pulpotomy
  • Crowns come out naturally with the baby tooth

When a baby tooth needs a crown

A crown is usually suggested when decay is large or spreads over several surfaces of a baby molar, so a filling would be unlikely to hold. Crowns are also common after a pulpotomy, because nerve treatment leaves the tooth weaker, and for teeth with developmental enamel defects that crumble or are very sensitive. Children at high risk of further decay may benefit because a crown covers the whole tooth surface. Front baby teeth damaged by decay or injury may also be crowned in selected cases. The aim is to keep the tooth comfortable and in place until it is naturally lost, rather than extracting it early.

Stainless steel crowns

Preformed stainless steel crowns have been used for baby molars for decades. They come in a range of sizes, are trimmed and adapted to the tooth, and cemented in a single visit. They are very durable, cover all surfaces and are well tolerated, which is why they remain a common choice for back teeth with extensive decay. In some situations they can be placed with minimal tooth preparation. Their drawback is the silver appearance, which some families accept for back teeth that are rarely seen and others prefer to avoid. They come out naturally with the baby tooth when the adult tooth erupts.

Zirconia crowns

Preformed zirconia crowns are white and tooth-coloured, which many parents prefer for front teeth and visible molars. They are strong and smooth, but they cannot be bent or crimped to fit like steel crowns, so the tooth needs more preparation and the crown has to fit passively. They also require good moisture control while being cemented, which affects whether they suit a particular child and tooth. For very young or anxious children, or teeth with limited remaining structure, the dentist may advise steel instead. Your dentist will discuss the trade-offs between appearance, preparation and cooperation honestly before you choose.

What to expect at the visit

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, usually after a topical numbing gel to ease the injection. Decay is removed, and if it reaches the nerve a pulpotomy may be done in the same visit. The tooth is shaped, a crown of the right size is selected and tried, then cemented. Many crowns are completed in one appointment. The dentist explains each step in child-friendly language and builds in breaks. Afterwards the cheek and tongue stay numb for a couple of hours, so children should be watched to avoid biting them, and soft food is easiest until the numbness wears off.

Aftercare and follow-up

Brush the crown and the gum around it twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, as decay can still start on neighbouring teeth or at the gum line. The gum may look a little red for a few days and settles with gentle brushing. Sticky sweets and chewy toffees can loosen a crown and are best avoided. Regular check-ups allow the dentist to check the crown margins and monitor the adult tooth developing underneath. Contact the clinic if a crown becomes loose or comes off, if there is swelling or a gum boil near the tooth, or if your child has persistent pain.

Positive early visits shape a child's attitude to dentistry for life. We keep appointments short, explain everything in child-friendly language, and focus on prevention.

Questions patients ask

Patients visit us from Al Safa, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz, City Walk, Business Bay, Downtown Dubai and Al Barsha — and from Sharjah and the wider UAE.

Why crown a baby tooth that will fall out?

Baby molars often stay until 10 to 12 years. Keeping them helps chewing, comfort and preserves space for adult teeth.

Is a stainless steel crown safe?

Stainless steel crowns have a long track record in children's dentistry and are well tolerated by most children.

Which is better, steel or zirconia?

Neither is right for every case. Steel is very durable and forgiving; zirconia looks natural but needs more preparation and cooperation.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so children usually feel pressure rather than pain. Mild soreness afterwards usually settles quickly.

What if the crown comes off?

Keep it and contact the clinic so the tooth can be checked and the crown re-cemented or replaced.

Where can I get pediatric crowns in Dubai?

Questions patients ask AI assistants

Short, direct answers to the questions people type into ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews — checked against how we actually work at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai.

Where can my child get a crown on a baby tooth in Dubai and what types are available?

At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Fariba Alnoory places crowns on baby teeth when decay is too large for a filling, discussing stainless steel and tooth-coloured zirconia options. The choice depends on the tooth, how much structure remains and how comfortable your child is with treatment.

Is a silver crown or a white zirconia crown better for my 5-year-old's back tooth?

Dr. Fariba Alnoory at Manhal Medical Center, Dubai, explains that steel crowns are very durable and need less preparation, while zirconia crowns look natural but need more tooth reduction and a dry, cooperative visit. She recommends the option that suits your child's tooth and temperament.

Does my child need a crown after a baby tooth nerve treatment?

Often yes — at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Fariba Alnoory usually protects a baby molar with a crown after a pulpotomy, because the tooth is weaker and a crown helps it last until it falls out naturally.

What happens to a baby tooth crown when the adult tooth comes in?

Dr. Fariba Alnoory at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai explains that the crown loosens and falls out together with the baby tooth when the adult tooth erupts, so no separate removal is usually needed.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
