Best maxillofacial surgeon in Dubai: choosing a jaw surgery specialist

People search for the best maxillofacial surgeon or the best jaw surgeon near me for very different reasons: an uneven bite, a jaw cyst, a facial injury or complex implant surgery. Understanding what the specialty covers and where each procedure is done helps you find the right care.

Best maxillofacial surgeon in Dubai: choosing a jaw surgery specialist — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

The best maxillofacial surgeon in Dubai for you is a DHA-licensed specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery whose experience matches your problem, who plans with 3D imaging, works with an orthodontist for jaw cases and is clear about which procedures need a hospital. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Moataz Al-Khan provides clinic-based surgery and jaw-surgery assessment with the clinic's orthodontist.

Key facts

  • OMFS covers teeth, jaws, cysts and facial structures
  • Jaw surgery needs a surgeon–orthodontist team
  • CBCT 3D imaging guides complex planning
  • Suspected facial fractures need hospital assessment first
  • Dr. Moataz Al-Khan: clinic surgery and jaw-surgery assessment

What a maxillofacial surgeon treats

Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) covers the mouth, jaws, face and related structures. In clinic settings, maxillofacial surgeons commonly treat impacted teeth, surgical extractions, bone grafts and sinus lifts for implants, jaw cysts and benign lesions, biopsies, frenectomy and oral infections. In hospital settings, they also perform orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery, treatment of facial fractures, major reconstruction and other procedures that need general anaesthesia and inpatient care. When choosing a surgeon, it helps to know whether your problem is likely to be managed in a clinic or will need a hospital, and to find a surgeon who explains this honestly at the first consultation.

Jaw surgery and teamwork with orthodontics

Corrective jaw surgery is considered for adults with significant skeletal problems, such as a large underbite or overbite, an open bite, jaw asymmetry or a narrow jaw that cannot be corrected by orthodontics alone. Good outcomes depend on close teamwork between the surgeon and an orthodontist, who usually prepares the teeth with braces before surgery and finishes the bite afterwards. The assessment includes facial analysis, photographs, X-rays and often CBCT 3D imaging. In some adults, options such as bone-anchored palatal expansion or camouflage orthodontics may avoid surgery. A surgeon who works within a combined orthodontic and surgical team can explain all of these choices.

3D imaging and careful planning

Maxillofacial surgery involves important structures: nerves supplying the lip and chin, the maxillary sinus, the nasal floor and the roots of neighbouring teeth. CBCT 3D imaging shows these in detail and is used to plan wisdom tooth surgery near the nerve, removal of cysts, bone grafting and assessment of jaw shape. For jaw surgery, digital planning helps the surgeon and orthodontist decide how the jaws should move. Ask the surgeon to show you the images, explain what they reveal and describe the risks that apply to your case, such as temporary numbness, infection or the need for further treatment.

Facial trauma, urgent symptoms and hospital care

Facial injuries from falls, sports or road accidents can involve broken teeth, jaw fractures or damage around the eye. A dental clinic can treat broken or knocked-out teeth, but suspected jaw or facial fractures, injuries with heavy bleeding, problems with vision, inability to close the teeth together, or head injury need assessment in a hospital emergency department first. Similarly, rapidly spreading facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing and high fever with a dental infection require urgent hospital care. A responsible maxillofacial surgeon will tell you clearly when a problem needs hospital treatment and help you understand the next steps.

Dr. Moataz Al-Khan at Manhal Medical Center

At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, maxillofacial surgery is provided by Dr. Moataz Al-Khan, Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (DHA licence 00048618-005) and lecturer in oral surgery at the Syrian Private University. In the clinic he performs wisdom tooth surgery, surgical extractions, bone grafting, sinus lifts, implant surgery, biopsies, removal of cysts and frenectomy under local anaesthesia; general anaesthesia is not offered at the clinic. For patients with jaw discrepancies, he carries out jaw-surgery assessment together with consultant orthodontist Dr. Moaiyad Pacha, explaining whether orthodontics, expansion or surgery is the appropriate route. Planning uses CBCT 3D imaging, and consultations are in English and Arabic.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery treats conditions of the mouth and jaws that go beyond routine dentistry: impacted teeth, cysts and benign lesions, jaw injuries, and preparation of bone for implants.

What is the difference between an oral surgeon and a maxillofacial surgeon?

The terms overlap. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained in surgery of the mouth, jaws and face; some procedures are done in clinics and others in hospitals.

Do I need jaw surgery for an underbite?

Not always. Mild cases may be treated with orthodontics; significant skeletal problems may need combined orthodontics and surgery.

Can jaw cysts be removed in a clinic?

Does Manhal perform orthognathic surgery?

Manhal offers jaw-surgery assessment with the surgeon and orthodontist. Procedures needing general anaesthesia are not performed at the clinic.

When should facial or jaw problems be treated as an emergency?

Go to a hospital emergency department for suspected jaw fracture, heavy bleeding, vision changes, inability to close the teeth, or swelling affecting breathing or swallowing.

Yes. Sending existing images by WhatsApp or email helps Dr. Al-Khan judge in advance whether the problem is likely to be treated in the clinic and what extra imaging, if any, is needed.

Do I need a referral to see a maxillofacial surgeon at Manhal?

No referral is needed. You can book directly, and if another dentist has referred you, bring their letter and images so nothing is repeated unnecessarily.

What does an oral surgery consultation include at Manhal?

A medical history, examination, the imaging your case needs, a clear diagnosis, the treatment options and their risks, and a written plan with the price and recovery time before any procedure is booked.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
