Allergan Botox in Dubai — how it compares with Dysport, Xeomin and other brands

Many people use Botox as a general word for anti-wrinkle injections, but it is actually one brand. Searches for Allergan Botox in Dubai usually come from people who want to know what they are being injected with and whether it is genuine.

Allergan Botox in Dubai — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

Botox is the brand name of onabotulinumtoxinA made by Allergan, and Dysport and Xeomin are other approved botulinum toxin type A products; all relax muscles in a similar way but differ in units, formulation and handling. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, a Specialist Dermatologist explains which product is recommended for you and why, and you can ask to see the product used.

Key facts

  • Botox is the Allergan brand of botulinum toxin type A
  • Dysport and Xeomin are other approved products
  • Units differ between brands and do not convert one-to-one
  • Results usually last about three to four months
  • Ask to see the sealed product and batch number

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin: the basics

All three products contain botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily blocks the nerve signal that makes a muscle contract. Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA, Allergan) is the longest-established brand. Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) and Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) are also widely approved. Xeomin is formulated without the accessory complexing proteins found in the others, which has led to discussion about whether it may be less likely to trigger antibody resistance, although this is uncommon with any product at cosmetic doses. In practice, results from each can be very similar when used correctly by an experienced injector who adjusts the dose to your muscles.

Units are not interchangeable

Each product is measured in its own units, and these do not convert one-to-one. A unit of Dysport is not equivalent to a unit of Botox, and the conversion ratio varies by area and technique. This is one reason why comparing prices based on the number of units can be confusing unless you know which product is used. Dysport can also spread slightly differently in tissue, which some injectors use for larger areas. Your doctor chooses the product and dose according to the muscles treated, your previous response and the effect you want.

Onset and duration

Most people notice the effect beginning within two to five days, with the full result at around two weeks. Some patients and studies suggest Dysport may start a little earlier, but individual variation is larger than the difference between brands. Duration is typically about three to four months for the upper face with any of the three, depending on dose, muscle strength and metabolism. Higher-strength muscles, such as the masseter, may hold results longer. If one product has not lasted well for you, the dose, technique or product may be adjusted at your next visit.

How to check the product is genuine

Genuine products are supplied through authorised distributors and are licensed for use in the UAE. You are entitled to ask which product is being used, to see the sealed vial or box before it is prepared, and to have the product name and batch number recorded in your file. Be cautious of very low prices, treatments in non-clinical settings, or providers who cannot tell you the brand. Counterfeit or improperly stored toxin can be ineffective or unsafe. Checking that the injector is a DHA-licensed doctor on the Sheryan portal is an important safeguard.

Choosing the right product with your doctor

Rather than choosing a brand in advance, it is usually better to discuss your goals, past experience with toxins, any reactions and how long previous results lasted. Dr. Abdullah Anis, Specialist Dermatologist & Venereologist with more than 25 years of experience, explains the product he recommends, the dose for each area and what to expect. Botox and similar products are avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and in some neuromuscular disorders. Seek urgent care for difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing after any toxin injection, which is rare but serious. Mild bruising or headache usually settles within days.

Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscles that create expression lines. When dosed carefully it softens lines while keeping natural movement.

Questions patients ask

Patients visit us from Al Safa, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz, City Walk, Business Bay, Downtown Dubai and Al Barsha — and from Sharjah and the wider UAE.

Is Allergan Botox better than Dysport?

Neither is universally better; both work well in experienced hands, and the choice depends on area, dose and your previous response.

Why do some clinics quote more units for Dysport?

Dysport units are measured differently, so a larger number of units does not mean a larger dose than Botox.

Does Xeomin last longer?

Duration is generally similar; individual factors usually matter more than the brand.

How do I know the Botox is real?

Ask to see the sealed vial, confirm the brand and batch are recorded, and make sure a DHA-licensed doctor injects you.

Can I switch brands?

Yes. Your doctor will adjust the dose because units differ between products.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
