Quick answer

Dark lips laser treatment at Manhal Medical Center in Al Safa 1, Dubai, uses a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser to lighten excess pigment on the lips caused by smoking, sun or past irritation. Specialist Dermatologist Dr. Abdullah Anis checks the cause first, and Dr. Kavitha Ravichandran performs the sessions — usually 3–6, about 4 weeks apart, with little downtime.

Lighter, more even lips — starting with the cause

Dark or patchy lips are one of the most common things people try to hide with lipstick and filters. Smoking, years of strong UAE sun, lip-licking, a reaction to a lip product or marks left after cold sores can all leave the lips darker than the rest of your face, or with a dark border that never matches.

Lip depigmentation with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser targets that excess pigment in very short pulses, gradually revealing a softer, more even lip colour. At Manhal, every plan begins with Dr. Abdullah Anis, Specialist Dermatologist & Venereologist, because a few causes of dark lips are medical and need a different route. The sessions are then performed by Dr. Kavitha Ravichandran, DHA-licensed Medical Aesthetician & Aesthetic Laser Specialist with more than 17 years in aesthetic skin, hair and laser treatments, under his supervision.

Who lip lightening laser suits

  • Smokers' lips and darkening from shisha, now or in the past
  • Sun-related darkening of the lips and lip border
  • Dark marks after cold sores, eczema, lip-licking or a product reaction (post-inflammatory pigmentation)
  • Uneven lips — a darker lower lip or patchy corners
  • Natural, inherited darker lip colour that you would like softened (results are more modest)

When dark lips need a doctor first

  • A single new, growing or irregular dark spot on the lip
  • Dark spots on the lips that also appear inside the mouth, on the fingers or nails
  • Darkening with tiredness, weight loss or other symptoms
  • Darkening that started after a new medicine
  • Active cold sore, cracked or inflamed lips

Why a dermatologist checks your lips before any laser

Most dark lips are harmless and cosmetic. But a small number of cases are a sign of something else: a fixed drug reaction, contact allergy to a lip product, a hormonal condition, or a pigmented spot that should be examined rather than lasered. Dr. Abdullah Anis, who trained in dermatopathology at St John's Institute of Dermatology in London, looks at the pattern, history and medicines before anything is treated.

If you have had cold sores, the doctor may advise antiviral cover around your sessions, because laser can trigger a flare. If you smoke, he will explain honestly that the lips are likely to darken again unless smoking stops or is reduced.

Your lip depigmentation sessions

  1. Consultation with Dr. Abdullah Anis: lip history, smoking, cold sores, medicines and close examination.
  2. Written plan and quote, with photographs to track your progress.
  3. Session with Dr. Kavitha Ravichandran: numbing cream, eye protection and cooling, then a few quick passes — about 15–20 minutes.
  4. Mild swelling and slight darkening or flaking for a few days; a soothing balm and SPF lip balm are used.
  5. Repeat about every 4 weeks, usually 3–6 sessions, then occasional maintenance.

Pain, downtime and results

Does lip laser hurt?

The lips are sensitive, so we apply a numbing cream first and use cooling during the session. Most patients describe a quick snapping or tingling feeling and find it well tolerated.

What happens after the session?

Expect some swelling for one to two days and, sometimes, a slight darkening or fine flaking as the pigment lifts. Most people return to work the same day.

What results can I expect?

Smokers' lips and sun-related darkening often lighten noticeably over the course. Naturally darker lips soften, but they will not become a different colour — and we tell you that at the consultation. Results last longest when the cause is controlled: less smoking, daily SPF lip balm, no lip-licking.

Combine with lip whitening and plumping

Many patients want more than colour: they also want softer, hydrated lips with a little more definition. Laser lightening can be planned together with our lip whitening and plumping treatment for hydration and glow, or with hyaluronic acid lip filler by Dr. Abdullah Anis for shape and volume. The order and spacing are set in your plan, so treatments support each other rather than overlap.

Questions patients ask

Patients visit us from Al Safa, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz, City Walk, Business Bay, Downtown Dubai and Al Barsha — and from Sharjah and the wider UAE.

Can laser lighten dark lips?

Yes, in many cases. A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser breaks up excess pigment in the lips, and the colour softens over several sessions. It works best for darkening caused by smoking, sun and past irritation. Naturally dark lips lighten more modestly. Dr. Abdullah Anis checks the cause first so the laser is used only where it can help.

How many sessions does lip lightening need?

Most patients need 3–6 sessions about four weeks apart, depending on how dark and deep the pigment is and what caused it. Smokers who continue smoking may need more sessions and regular maintenance. Your number of sessions is written in your plan after the assessment.

Is lip laser treatment painful?

The lips are sensitive, so we apply a numbing cream before the session and use cooling throughout. Most patients feel a quick snapping or tingling sensation that is well tolerated. Each session takes about 15–20 minutes.

Is there downtime after dark lips laser?

Usually only mild swelling for one to two days and, sometimes, slight darkening or flaking as the pigment lifts. Most people return to work the same day. Avoid very hot drinks, spicy food and lipstick for the first 24 hours, and use SPF lip balm daily.

Will my lips go dark again?

Results can last a long time, but pigment can return if the cause continues — smoking, sun without protection, lip-licking or an irritating lip product. Daily SPF lip balm and reducing smoking protect your result, and a maintenance session can refresh it.

Is lip lightening safe for darker skin?

It can be, with care. Darker skin tends to have naturally darker lips and a higher risk of uneven lightening, so energy is kept conservative and increased gradually. Realistic expectations matter: the goal is a softer, more even tone, not a completely different lip colour.

Can laser trigger a cold sore?

Yes, laser on the lips can trigger a flare in people who get cold sores. If you have a history of them, Dr. Abdullah Anis may prescribe antiviral cover around your sessions, and we postpone treatment if a cold sore is active.

How much does dark lips laser cost in Dubai?

The price depends on the area treated — both lips, the border or the corners — and how many sessions you need. You receive a written quote for a single session or a course after assessment. Message us on WhatsApp for today's price.

Can I combine lip laser with fillers or lip whitening?

Yes. Many patients combine laser lightening with lip whitening and plumping for hydration and glow, or with hyaluronic acid lip filler for shape. The order and spacing are set in your plan so treatments do not overlap.

Who performs lip depigmentation at Manhal?

Dr. Kavitha Ravichandran, DHA-licensed Medical Aesthetician & Aesthetic Laser Specialist with more than 17 years in aesthetic laser treatments, performs the sessions. Specialist Dermatologist Dr. Abdullah Anis examines your lips before treatment and supervises the plan.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
