Why adults are different
In children the palate is still separated along its midline and expands easily. In adults it is usually fused, so conventional expanders mostly tilt teeth.
How MARPE works
The expander is anchored to the palatal bone with small miniscrews, so the expansion force goes into the bone rather than the teeth.
What the research shows
Clinical studies, including randomised trials, report skeletal expansion in many adults and improvements in nasal airway measures. In selected patients with sleep-disordered breathing, improvements have been reported — but diagnosis and follow-up belong with a sleep physician.
