Wisdom teeth: when should they come out?

Not every wisdom tooth is a problem

Healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that you can clean can stay. Problems start when there isn't enough room.

Warning signs

Recurring pain or swelling at the back of the mouth, bad taste, difficulty opening, or decay on the molar in front.

Planning protects nerves

Lower wisdom teeth can sit close to the nerve that supplies sensation to the lip. X-rays or 3D imaging show the relationship before surgery.

Recovery tips

Cold compresses on day one, soft food, gentle salt-water rinses from day two, and no smoking or straws.
