Crown fell off — what to do right now and whether it can be re-cemented
A crown coming off while eating is unsettling, but it is a common dental problem and usually not an emergency. What you do in the first few hours and days can make it easier to save both the tooth and the crown.

If your crown falls off, keep it safe in a clean container, avoid chewing on that side, keep the area clean and contact your dentist as soon as possible. Many crowns can be re-cemented if both the crown and the tooth are intact. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee checks the tooth for decay or fracture before deciding whether to re-cement or make a new crown.
Key facts
- Keep the crown in a clean container
- Do not use household glue
- Pharmacy temporary cement is a short-term fix only
- Decay or fracture must be ruled out before re-cementing
- Seek urgent care for swelling, fever or severe pain
Immediate steps when a crown comes off
First, check that you have not swallowed or inhaled the crown; if you are coughing persistently or have difficulty breathing, seek urgent medical care. If you have the crown, rinse it gently, dry it and keep it in a small container or sealed bag. Do not try to glue it with household adhesive. Rinse your mouth with warm water and look at the tooth in a mirror: note if part of the tooth has broken off with the crown. Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot, cold or sweet food if the tooth is sensitive. Then call the clinic to arrange an appointment.
Temporary measures at home
If the exposed tooth is sensitive, a dental temporary cement from a pharmacy can sometimes be used to seat the crown back for a short time, provided it fits easily and fully, you can bite normally and you are not at risk of swallowing it. Never force a crown into place. Alternatively, a small amount of temporary filling material or sugar-free gum can cover a sharp edge. These are stop-gaps lasting days, not weeks. Keep brushing gently around the tooth, because an exposed prepared tooth can decay quickly. Over-the-counter pain relief suitable for you can help until you are seen.
Why crowns come off
A crown may come off because the cement has washed out over time, because decay has developed under the crown and undermined the tooth, because the tooth itself has fractured, or because the original preparation was short or tapered and gave little retention. Sticky foods such as toffee or chewing gum, grinding and biting hard objects can all dislodge a crown. Crowns on implants can loosen when an abutment screw works loose rather than the cement failing. Identifying the cause is important, because simply re-cementing a crown over decay or a crack is likely to fail again and could allow the problem to worsen.
Can the crown be re-cemented?
Often yes, if the crown is intact, still fits accurately and the tooth underneath is healthy. The dentist cleans out the old cement, checks for decay and cracks, takes an X-ray if needed and confirms the fit before re-cementing. If decay is present, it must be removed and the core rebuilt, which usually means a new crown, since the old one will no longer fit. If a significant part of the tooth has broken, a post and core or crown lengthening may be needed. If the root is cracked, extraction and an implant or bridge may be discussed. Implant crowns that loosen are usually re-tightened.
When it is urgent and how to get seen
A lost crown is usually not a medical emergency, but it should be seen within a few days to protect the tooth and stop neighbouring teeth from shifting. Seek prompt care for severe pain, swelling of the gum or face, fever, a sharp broken tooth cutting your tongue, or bleeding that does not stop. A lost front crown can also be restored temporarily for appearance. Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, is open daily, and Dr. Manhal Helfawee and the dental team arrange visits for lost crowns as promptly as the schedule allows. Bring the crown with you to the appointment.
A crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth; a bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring to the teeth on either side. Zirconia and porcelain options combine strength with a natural appearance.

Is a crown falling off an emergency?
Usually not, but it should be seen within a few days. Swelling, fever or severe pain need prompt care.
Can I glue my crown back on myself?
Do not use household glue. A pharmacy temporary dental cement may hold it briefly if it fits easily and fully.
What if I swallowed my crown?
It usually passes naturally, but seek medical advice if you have pain, breathing problems or persistent coughing, and contact your dentist.
Can the same crown be reused?
Often yes, if it is undamaged, fits well and the tooth underneath is healthy.
Why did my crown come off with part of the tooth inside?
Usually because decay or a fracture weakened the tooth core. The tooth needs assessment to see if it can be rebuilt.

My crown fell off, what should I do until I can see a dentist in Dubai?
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee advises keeping the crown safe in a container, avoiding chewing on that side, keeping the tooth clean and calling the clinic to be seen within a few days. A pharmacy temporary cement may help briefly, but household glue should never be used.
Can a dentist put my old crown back on or do I need a new one?
Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center, Dubai, re-cements crowns when the crown is intact, fits well and the tooth is healthy. If there is decay or a fracture underneath, the tooth is repaired first, which usually means a new crown is needed.
Why do dental crowns keep coming off the same tooth?
According to Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, repeated loss often points to a short or tapered tooth, decay underneath, a cracked core or grinding. Solving the cause, such as a new core, crown lengthening or a night guard, is needed for a lasting result.
Is it dangerous to leave a tooth without its crown for weeks?
Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai explains that an exposed prepared tooth can decay, become sensitive, fracture or let neighbouring teeth drift, so it should be seen within a few days rather than weeks.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staffAmazing service and very friendly team I'm very happy with my dental implant results with Dr.Manhal ❤️
