Pain after a dental crown — what is normal and what is not
A new crown should feel like part of your mouth within a short time. If yours still hurts, or you feel some regret about having it done, it helps to know which problems are normal and which can be fixed.

Mild sensitivity or gum soreness after a new crown is common and usually settles within a few days to two weeks. Pain that is sharp on biting, throbbing, wakes you at night or gets worse rather than better needs a check, as the bite may be high or the nerve may be irritated. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee can review and adjust a crown that is causing discomfort.
Key facts
- Mild sensitivity usually settles within days to two weeks
- Pain should improve steadily; worsening pain needs a check
- A high bite is common and quick to adjust
- Throbbing, night pain or swelling can mean nerve inflammation
- Shape, colour and fit concerns can often be corrected
How long does pain last after a crown?
After a crown is fitted, mild sensitivity to cold or slight tenderness when chewing is common for a few days, and occasionally up to two weeks. The tooth has been shaped, the gum may have been gently pushed back for the scan, and the cement can briefly irritate the inner tooth. This discomfort normally improves steadily, day by day. Over-the-counter pain relief suitable for you, sensitive toothpaste and avoiding very hot or cold drinks usually help. What matters is the trend: pain that fades is generally part of normal healing, while pain that stays the same or increases after the first week should be reviewed.
A high bite: the most fixable cause
If the crown hits first when you close, or chewing on it feels sharp or bruised, the bite may be slightly high. Even a fraction of a millimetre can overload the tooth and its supporting ligament, causing aching that spreads to the jaw. Because the area is numb during fitting, a high spot is easy to miss. This is one of the simplest problems to solve: the dentist marks the bite with articulating paper and polishes the crown surface in a short visit. Pain from a high bite often settles within days of adjustment. Do not wait weeks hoping it improves, as constant overload can inflame the nerve.
Nerve irritation and pain under the crown
Preparing a tooth for a crown can irritate the pulp, especially if the tooth already had deep fillings or decay. Most teeth recover, but a small number develop lasting inflammation. Warning signs include lingering pain after hot or cold, spontaneous throbbing, pain that wakes you, or pain under the crown when lying down. Swelling, a bad taste or a gum bump suggests infection. In these cases an X-ray and vitality testing are needed, and root canal treatment can often be done through the crown without replacing it. Pain under a zirconia or other crown years later usually means decay or a crack and also needs assessment.
Gum soreness and food trapping
The gum around a new crown may be tender for several days, particularly if it was retracted or a temporary crown irritated it. Warm salt-water rinses and gentle brushing usually help. Persistent gum soreness, bleeding or swelling can be caused by excess cement left under the gum, an overhanging margin, or a contact that is too open so food packs between the teeth. A contact that is too tight can make flossing difficult. These issues are visible on examination and X-ray: excess cement can be removed, and a poorly contoured crown may need adjustment or, occasionally, replacement to allow healthy gums.
Regret after crowns, and what can be adjusted
Some patients search for 'regret after dental crowns' because the colour, shape or feel is not what they expected, or because a front crown looks too bulky. Many concerns can be addressed: the bite can be refined, contours polished and, if the colour or shape is clearly unacceptable, a crown can be remade. Before treatment, Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center discusses shade, shape and expectations, and for front teeth a trial or temporary can help you preview the result. If your crown was done elsewhere and is uncomfortable, an assessment with X-rays can identify whether adjustment, treatment of the nerve or a new crown is the sensible next step.
A crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth; a bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring to the teeth on either side. Zirconia and porcelain options combine strength with a natural appearance.

The most common reason is a high bite; other causes include nerve irritation, a crack or decay under the crown.

Why does my new crown still hurt after two weeks, and who can check it in Dubai?
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee reviews crowns that remain painful beyond the usual healing period. Is it normal to have pain under a zirconia crown?

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staffAmazing service and very friendly team I'm very happy with my dental implant results with Dr.Manhal ❤️
