Best oral surgeon in Dubai: how to choose a surgeon for extractions and implants

People usually look for an oral surgeon when a dentist recommends removing an impacted wisdom tooth, a difficult extraction, bone grafting before implants or a biopsy. Knowing what to check helps you feel confident about the surgeon and the procedure.

Best oral surgeon in Dubai: how to choose a surgeon for extractions and implants — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

The best oral surgeon in Dubai for your procedure holds a DHA specialist licence in oral and maxillofacial surgery, plans with CBCT 3D imaging where needed, explains anaesthesia clearly and has a plan for complications and aftercare. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Moataz Al-Khan performs wisdom tooth removal, surgical extractions, bone grafting, sinus lifts and implant surgery under local anaesthesia.

Key facts

  • Check for a DHA licence in oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • CBCT helps plan wisdom teeth near nerves and sinus surgery
  • Ask which anaesthesia options are available
  • Written aftercare and a clear contact plan
  • Dr. Moataz Al-Khan: specialist OMFS and oral surgery lecturer

Specialist licence and training

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a dental specialty that requires several years of postgraduate surgical training. In Dubai, check that the surgeon holds a DHA licence in oral and maxillofacial surgery on the Sheryan system. Specialist training covers surgical anatomy, management of nerves and sinuses, bone grafting, treatment of cysts and infections and handling of complications. General dentists remove many teeth safely, but deeply impacted wisdom teeth, teeth close to the nerve, extensive grafting and biopsies benefit from specialist care. Ask how often the surgeon performs your type of procedure, whether they also teach, and how they work with your dentist or orthodontist.

CBCT 3D imaging before complex surgery

For many routine extractions, a standard dental X-ray is enough. For impacted lower wisdom teeth close to the inferior alveolar nerve, upper teeth near the sinus, bone grafting, sinus lifts and implant surgery, CBCT 3D imaging shows the exact relationship of roots, nerves and sinuses. This helps the surgeon choose the safest approach, estimate difficulty and explain specific risks such as temporary numbness. Ask whether a CBCT scan is needed for your case and to see the images with an explanation. A surgeon who can show you where the nerve lies and how the tooth will be removed helps you understand and agree to the plan.

Anaesthesia options explained honestly

Most oral surgery in clinics is done under local anaesthesia, which numbs the area completely so you feel pressure but not sharp pain. Some clinics offer conscious sedation for anxious patients, and general anaesthesia is provided in hospital settings. Ask which options are available where you are being treated, who administers sedation if offered and what monitoring is used. At Manhal Medical Center, procedures are carried out under local anaesthesia; general anaesthesia is not offered at the clinic, and any request for sedation should be discussed with the clinic in advance so you know what is possible. Clear information helps anxious patients plan with confidence.

Complication handling and aftercare

Every surgical procedure carries some risk, including swelling, bleeding, dry socket, infection and, for lower wisdom teeth, temporary or rarely longer-lasting numbness of the lip or tongue. A good oral surgeon discusses these before surgery, takes steps to reduce them and gives written aftercare instructions on pain relief, cold compresses, diet, rinsing and smoking. Ask how to contact the clinic after surgery, when stitches are removed and when you will be reviewed. Knowing that the same surgeon will manage any problem, rather than referring you elsewhere, is reassuring. Prompt review of unexpected pain, fever or bleeding is part of safe care.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
