Root canal specialist in Dubai — endodontist or dentist, and when to be referred

Patients searching “root canal specialist Dubai” or “endodontic treatment in Dubai” often want reassurance that their tooth is in the right hands. Understanding who does what helps you ask the right questions.

Root canal specialist in Dubai — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

Many root canals are routinely and successfully treated by experienced general dentists, while an endodontist is a dentist with specialist training in root canal treatment who often manages complex cases such as retreatments, calcified or curved canals and persistent infections. The right choice depends on the complexity of your tooth. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee assesses the tooth with X-rays and CBCT where needed and explains whether it can be treated at the clinic or should be referred to an endodontic specialist.

Key facts

  • Endodontists have specialist training in root canals
  • Many routine root canals are done by general dentists
  • Retreatments and calcified canals are often complex
  • CBCT helps reveal hidden canals and cracks
  • Referral for complex cases is a sign of careful care

Endodontist vs general dentist

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the nerve and root canals of teeth. An endodontist has completed additional postgraduate training focused on diagnosing tooth pain and performing root canal treatment, retreatment and related surgery. General dentists are also trained to perform root canal treatment and carry out a large share of routine cases, especially on front teeth and premolars. In Dubai, clinicians' licences and specialist titles can be checked on the DHA Sheryan system. The key question is not only the title but whether the clinician has the experience, equipment and time needed for your particular tooth, and whether they refer when a case is beyond that.

Which root canal cases are complex

Factors that make a root canal more complex include previous root canal treatment that has failed, very narrow or calcified canals, strongly curved roots, extra or unusual canals, broken instruments or posts inside the tooth, perforations, teeth with large cracks, and persistent infection despite treatment. Molars, especially upper molars, often have complex anatomy. Medical factors, limited mouth opening and patient anxiety can also affect planning. Some of these cases benefit from specialist equipment and experience, and some teeth may need surgical endodontic treatment. Identifying complexity early, before treatment starts, is better than discovering it halfway through.

Imaging, magnification and other tools

Good diagnosis and treatment rely on clear information. Standard dental X-rays show the tooth and surrounding bone, while 3D CBCT imaging can reveal extra canals, curvatures, cracks and the extent of infection that 2D images may miss. Magnification, such as loupes or an operating microscope, helps clinicians see fine canal openings; specialist endodontic practices commonly use a microscope. Other tools include electronic devices that measure canal length and modern rotary instruments. When choosing where to have treatment, it is reasonable to ask what imaging will be used, how canal length is measured, how the tooth will be isolated and how the final restoration will be planned.

How referrals work

A good referral is a sign of careful practice. If the general dentist finds that a tooth is complex, for example a failed previous root canal or a calcified canal, they may refer you to an endodontist for that part of treatment and then provide the final crown or filling afterwards. The referring dentist shares X-rays and notes so the specialist has the full picture. Emergency relief, such as removing inflamed nerve tissue and placing a dressing, can often be provided first so you are comfortable while the referral is arranged. You should be told why a referral is suggested and what each clinician will do.

Root canal assessment at Manhal

At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee, Founder and Medical Director with more than 20 years in the UAE, assesses painful or infected teeth with clinical tests, X-rays and, where useful, CBCT imaging. He explains whether the tooth can be treated at the clinic, the expected number of sessions and how it will be restored. If the case appears complex, such as a difficult retreatment, he will explain this openly and discuss referral to an endodontic specialist. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing or rapidly increasing pain, as these signs need prompt attention.

Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside the tooth, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them. It relieves toothache and allows you to keep your natural tooth instead of extracting it.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.
