Tooth pain after a root canal — what's normal and what isn't

Patients are often surprised that a tooth without a nerve can still feel sore. The tissues around the root were inflamed and need a few days to calm down.

Tooth pain after a root canal — Manhal Medical Center, Dubai
Quick answer

Mild tenderness when biting for two to five days after root canal treatment (سحب العصب) is normal and settles with standard painkillers. Pain that gets worse after day three, swelling, a feeling that the tooth hits first when biting, or pain returning weeks later should be checked.

Key facts

  • 2–5 days of tenderness is common
  • Worsening pain or swelling = review
  • Avoid hard chewing until crowned
  • Crown protects back teeth

Normal after treatment

Tenderness on biting and a dull ache for a few days, easing day by day.

Needs review

Increasing pain, swelling, fever, a temporary filling that has come out, or a high bite after treatment.

Pain weeks or months later

A missed canal, a crack or leakage under a filling can cause renewed symptoms; retreatment or another option may be needed.

Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside the tooth, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them. It relieves toothache and allows you to keep your natural tooth instead of extracting it.
