Bleeding after tooth extraction — how long it lasts, how to stop it and when it is an emergency
Seeing blood in your mouth after an extraction or wisdom tooth removal can be worrying, and a small amount of blood mixed with saliva often looks like more than it is. Knowing what is normal and how to stop bleeding at home helps you stay calm and recognise when to call.

After a tooth extraction, active bleeding usually slows within the first hour with firm pressure on gauze, and light oozing or pink saliva can continue for up to 24 hours; bleeding that soaks gauze repeatedly after an hour or more of pressure needs to be checked. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Moataz Al-Khan and Dr. Manhal Helfawee give clear bleeding-control instructions after every extraction.
Key facts
- Bite on folded gauze for 30–45 minutes without checking
- Light oozing and pink saliva can last up to 24 hours
- A moistened black tea bag can help; coffee does not
- Avoid spitting, rinsing, straws and smoking on day one
- Never stop blood thinners without your doctor’s advice
What is normal bleeding after an extraction?
A socket bleeds after a tooth is removed, and a blood clot then forms to seal it and start healing. For the first 30 to 60 minutes, bleeding is controlled by biting firmly on the gauze the dentist places. After that, slight oozing is common for several hours, and saliva may look pink or red for up to a day, especially after wisdom tooth removal or multiple extractions. Small amounts of blood dissolve in saliva and look dramatic, so judge by whether fresh gauze becomes soaked bright red quickly. Mild oozing overnight may leave a stain on your pillow; using an old pillowcase helps.
How to stop bleeding: gauze and the tea bag method
Fold a clean piece of gauze into a thick pad, place it directly over the socket and bite down firmly and continuously for 30 to 45 minutes without checking it. Sit upright and stay calm, as lying flat and repeated checking can restart bleeding. If oozing continues, a moistened black tea bag can be used in the same way: tea contains tannins that may help the blood clot. Wrap it in gauze, place it on the socket and bite for 30 minutes. Coffee does not stop bleeding and hot drinks may increase it. Avoid spitting, rinsing, straws and touching the area with your tongue on the first day.
Is swallowing blood harmful?
Swallowing small amounts of blood mixed with saliva is common and not dangerous, though it can make some people feel nauseous or cause dark stools for a day. Try not to spit repeatedly; spitting creates suction that can disturb the clot. Instead, let saliva gently drain or swallow normally. If you are swallowing large amounts of fresh blood or feel faint, the bleeding needs assessment. Keeping your head elevated with an extra pillow for the first night, avoiding strenuous exercise and bending over, and not smoking all help the clot stay in place.
What can cause prolonged bleeding?
Prolonged bleeding is more likely after surgical extractions, with inflamed gums, if the clot is disturbed by rinsing, spitting, sucking or smoking, or with high blood pressure. Blood-thinning medicines, such as anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, and some medical conditions affecting clotting increase the tendency to bleed. Never stop a blood thinner on your own before an extraction; the surgeon will plan with your prescribing doctor where needed and may use stitches and local measures to help control bleeding. Tell the clinic in advance about all medicines, herbal supplements and any history of heavy bleeding.
When bleeding is an emergency — and help at Manhal in Dubai
Contact the clinic if bleeding continues to soak gauze bright red after two rounds of 30 to 45 minutes of firm pressure, if bleeding restarts heavily hours or days later, or if you are on blood thinners and bleeding seems excessive. Seek emergency care straight away if bleeding is heavy and will not stop, or if you feel faint, dizzy or short of breath, or have swelling that affects swallowing or breathing. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Moataz Al-Khan, specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and Dr. Manhal Helfawee, consultant implantologist, plan extractions with your medical history in mind and provide written aftercare and follow-up.
When a tooth can't be saved, careful extraction protects the surrounding bone for future replacement. We discuss implant or bridge options before the tooth is removed.

How long should I expect bleeding after wisdom tooth removal, and when should I call the clinic?

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staffAmazing service and very friendly team I'm very happy with my dental implant results with Dr.Manhal ❤️
