Sunburn treatment — soothing burnt skin, blisters, and preventing dark marks
Even long-term UAE residents get caught out: a beach day, a desert trip or a boat outing can cause a painful burn within a short time. Beyond the immediate discomfort, sunburn can leave uneven pigmentation and adds to long-term skin damage.

Most mild sunburn can be treated at home by cooling the skin, moisturising, drinking fluids and taking simple pain relief, but blistering over a large area, fever, dizziness or severe pain need medical care. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, a specialist dermatologist treats significant sunburn and helps prevent the dark patches that often follow a burn, especially on medium and darker skin.
Key facts
- Cool the skin, moisturise and drink extra fluids
- Leave blisters intact and watch for infection
- Fever, confusion or extensive blistering needs urgent care
- Darker skin often develops dark marks after sunburn
- Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential in the UAE
First steps for sunburn at home
Get out of the sun as soon as you notice redness, because a burn continues to develop for several hours. Cool the skin with lukewarm showers or cool, damp compresses rather than ice. Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser or aloe vera gel several times a day, and avoid heavy oils or petroleum jelly on freshly burnt skin, as they can trap heat. Drink extra water, because sunburn draws fluid to the skin surface. Simple pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, if suitable for you, can ease pain and inflammation. Wear loose, soft cotton clothing and keep the burnt area covered from further sun until it has fully healed.
Blisters and peeling skin
Blistering means a deeper, second-degree burn. Leave blisters intact where possible, because the roof protects the healing skin underneath from infection. If a blister breaks on its own, gently clean it with mild soap and water, apply a thin layer of a bland ointment, and cover it with a non-stick dressing. Do not peel off flaking skin; let it shed naturally and keep moisturising. Signs of infection include increasing redness spreading beyond the burn, warmth, swelling, pus, or red streaks, and these need medical review. Dr. Abdullah Anis can assess blistered sunburn, advise on dressings and prescribe treatment when inflammation or infection needs it.
When to see a doctor urgently
Seek prompt medical care if sunburn covers a large area of the body with blisters, or if you develop fever, chills, headache, nausea, confusion, fainting or signs of dehydration such as very dark urine or not passing urine. These may indicate sun poisoning or heat illness, which can be serious and may need emergency care. Babies and young children with sunburn should be seen by a doctor, as should anyone whose burn is extremely painful or affects the eyes. People taking medicines that increase sun sensitivity, such as certain antibiotics, acne medicines or diuretics, can burn severely and should mention these medicines to the doctor.
Preventing dark marks after a burn
As sunburn heals, many people, particularly those with Middle Eastern, South Asian or African skin, notice dark patches where the skin was inflamed. This is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and sunburn can also worsen existing melasma and sunspots. To reduce this risk, protect the healing skin strictly from further sun, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen once the skin is no longer raw, and avoid scrubbing or harsh products. If dark patches persist after the skin has healed, Dr. Abdullah Anis can recommend pigment-correcting creams and, later, gentle peels suited to your skin type. Starting treatment too early on inflamed skin can make pigmentation worse, so timing matters.
Sun protection in the UAE climate
The UV index in the UAE is high for much of the year, so sunburn prevention is daily rather than seasonal. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, applied generously about 15 to 20 minutes before going outside and reapplied every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides add protection against visible light, which is helpful for people prone to pigmentation. Seek shade during the middle of the day, wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses, and remember that reflection from sand and water increases exposure. Repeated sunburn raises the long-term risk of skin cancer, so new or changing spots should be checked.
Pigmentation has several causes — sun, hormones, inflammation — and melasma in particular can worsen with aggressive treatment. A dermatologist chooses gentle, evidence-based combinations.

Reasonable price and great location. Great experience so far I had my laser done and very happy with the result. So I decided to purchase another package :)Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staff
