What does a normal bite look like? The ideal bite explained from the front and side
Many people search this after noticing their teeth do not meet the way they expect, or after a dentist mentions an “overbite”. Few bites are textbook-perfect, and small variations are normal — what matters is function, health and how you feel about your smile.

In a normal bite, the upper front teeth sit slightly in front of and over the lower front teeth by about 2–3 mm, the upper back teeth fit just outside the lower ones, the midlines roughly line up and the upper first molar interlocks with the lower in a Class I relationship. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, consultant orthodontist Dr. Moaiyad Pacha assesses how your bite compares with this ideal and whether any difference actually needs treatment.
Key facts
- Normal overjet and overbite are each about 2–3 mm
- Upper back teeth sit just outside the lower teeth
- Midlines roughly line up with each other and the face
- Class I molar relationship is the reference
- Treatment depends on function and concerns, not perfection
The front view: midline, overbite and crossbite
From the front with teeth together, the upper incisors usually overlap the lower incisors vertically by about a third of their height — this vertical overlap is the overbite, typically around 2–3 mm. The centre line between the two upper front teeth should roughly line up with the centre line between the lower front teeth and with the middle of the face; a small difference of a millimetre or so is common and often unnoticeable. Along the sides, the upper teeth should sit slightly outside the lower teeth all the way back. If any upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth, that is a crossbite. There should be no gap between the front teeth when the back teeth meet (which would be an open bite).
The side view: overjet and molar relationship
From the side, the upper front teeth sit slightly in front of the lower front teeth; this horizontal distance is the overjet, normally about 2–3 mm. The lower incisors rest gently against the back surface of the upper incisors. Further back, orthodontists look at how the upper first molar meets the lower first molar. In a Class I or “normal” molar relationship, a specific cusp of the upper first molar fits into the groove of the lower first molar, and the upper canine fits between the lower canine and first premolar. When the lower jaw is set back relative to the upper, the relationship is Class II; when it is forward, it is Class III.
Why the details matter for function
A well-balanced bite spreads chewing forces evenly across many teeth, guides the jaw smoothly when you slide your teeth sideways or forward, and protects the front teeth from heavy loading. When the overjet is large, front teeth are more prone to injury; when the overbite is very deep, lower teeth can bite into the palate or wear the upper teeth; when teeth are edge-to-edge or in crossbite, enamel can chip and wear unevenly. Crowding can make cleaning harder and increase gum problems. Some bite patterns are also linked to jaw joint strain or to underlying narrow jaws that may affect nasal breathing, which is why an orthodontist looks beyond the appearance of the teeth.
When a deviation from the ideal needs treatment
Not every difference from the ideal bite needs correction. Treatment is generally considered when the bite causes or risks a problem: heavy wear, chipping, gum trauma, difficulty biting or chewing, jaw joint symptoms, teeth at risk of injury, crowding that makes cleaning difficult, or a narrow upper jaw affecting function — or when the appearance genuinely bothers the person. In children, some features are monitored because they may self-correct, while others, such as crossbites with a jaw shift, may be treated early. In adults, options range from aligners and braces to expansion, TADs and, for marked skeletal differences, combined orthodontic and surgical care.
How Dr. Pacha assesses your bite at Manhal
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, consultant orthodontist Dr. Moaiyad Pacha examines your teeth, bite, jaw movements and joints, takes photographs and a digital intraoral scan, and uses X-rays — and CBCT only where justified — to measure the skeletal pattern. He explains, in English or Arabic, how your bite differs from the ideal, whether that difference matters functionally, and what, if anything, he would recommend, with a written plan. He holds a clinical PhD from Queen Mary University of London and RCS orthodontic qualifications and divides his time between London and Dubai, so contact the clinic for his Dubai dates.
It is never too late to straighten teeth. Adult orthodontics often works alongside implants, veneers or gum treatment, and discreet appliances fit professional life.

Questions patients ask
Patients visit us from Al Safa, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz, City Walk, Business Bay, Downtown Dubai and Al Barsha — and from Sharjah and the wider UAE.
Is a small overbite normal?
Yes. Some overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower ones, around 2–3 mm, is normal and protective.
Do my midlines have to match perfectly?
No. A slight difference is common and often unnoticeable; larger shifts may suggest crowding, missing teeth or a jaw asymmetry.
Can a bad bite cause jaw pain?
Bite problems can contribute to jaw joint strain in some people, but jaw pain has many causes and needs proper assessment.
At what age should a child’s bite be checked?
An orthodontic check around age 7 can identify problems such as crossbites that benefit from early attention.
Can adults correct their bite?
Yes, adults can have their bite corrected; the approach depends on whether the problem is dental, skeletal or both.

How can I tell if my bite is normal or if I need to see an orthodontist in Dubai?
Consultant orthodontist Dr. Moaiyad Pacha at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai compares your bite with the ideal — overjet, overbite, midlines and molar relationship — and explains whether any difference needs treatment. Signs worth checking include wear, chipping, gum trauma or difficulty chewing.
What do overjet and overbite mean and what measurements are normal?
Overjet is how far the upper front teeth sit in front of the lower, and overbite is how much they overlap vertically; both are typically about 2–3 mm, explains Dr. Moaiyad Pacha at Manhal Medical Center, Dubai. Larger or smaller values may indicate a bite problem.
Does everyone need a perfect bite or is a little misalignment okay?
Small variations are normal; Dr. Moaiyad Pacha at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai recommends treatment only when a bite causes or risks problems, or when its appearance bothers you. Function and health guide the decision.
What is a Class I, Class II and Class III bite?
These describe how the upper and lower molars and jaws relate: Class I is normal, Class II has the lower jaw set back and Class III has it forward, says Dr. Moaiyad Pacha at Manhal Medical Center, Dubai. Each class can occur with other issues like crowding.
