Edge-to-edge bite — causes, risks and how it is corrected
People often notice an edge-to-edge bite because their front teeth look short, chip easily or feel like they “bang” together. It can also be the first sign of a developing underbite, which is why the cause matters.

An edge-to-edge bite is when the upper and lower front teeth meet tip to tip instead of the upper teeth sitting slightly in front of and over the lower ones. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, consultant orthodontist Dr. Moaiyad Pacha diagnoses whether it is a dental or skeletal problem and corrects it with aligners, braces, expansion or other approaches depending on the cause.
Key facts
- Front teeth meet tip to tip with little or no overlap
- Can be dental, skeletal or a functional forward slide
- Common risks: chipping, wear and sensitivity
- Sits between a normal bite and an underbite
- Often correctable with aligners, braces or expansion
What an edge-to-edge bite is
In a normal bite, the upper incisors overlap the lower incisors by about 2–3 mm both horizontally (overjet) and vertically (overbite). In an edge-to-edge or end-to-end bite, the overjet and overbite are close to zero, so the biting edges meet directly. It can affect all the front teeth or only one or two, and sometimes the back teeth also meet cusp to cusp. Some people bite edge-to-edge in their normal position, while others can bite with a small overlap but slide forward into an edge-to-edge position because the teeth guide them there — a distinction the orthodontist checks carefully, since it changes the treatment approach.
Causes: dental, skeletal or functional
An edge-to-edge bite can be dental, where the jaws are well related but the upper front teeth are tilted back or the lower ones tilted forward; skeletal, where the upper jaw is small or set back, or the lower jaw is larger or further forward, as in a mild Class III pattern; or functional, where a premature contact forces the lower jaw forward when you close. Other contributors include crowding, missing or small upper teeth, a narrow upper jaw, habits such as thrusting the lower jaw forward, and family tendency. Identifying which of these applies — with examination, X-rays and sometimes CBCT — is the key to choosing a treatment that lasts.
Wear, chipping and other risks
Because the incisal edges strike each other directly, edge-to-edge bites often cause flattening and chipping of the front teeth over time, which can shorten them and affect the smile. The wear can expose softer dentine, causing sensitivity, and in people who grind their teeth the damage can progress faster. Uneven loading may contribute to gum recession on lower front teeth, and repeated restoration of chipped edges can be frustrating if the bite is not addressed. Some people also find it harder to bite into foods cleanly. A functional forward slide may be associated with muscle discomfort in some patients, though jaw pain has many causes.
How it differs from an underbite
In an underbite (anterior crossbite or Class III), the lower front teeth sit in front of the upper front teeth. An edge-to-edge bite sits between a normal bite and an underbite, and in growing children it may be an early stage of a developing Class III pattern. In adults it can be stable for years or slowly worsen. A true underbite with a large skeletal difference may need more extensive treatment, including in some cases combined orthodontics and jaw surgery, whereas many edge-to-edge bites can be corrected with orthodontics alone. Monitoring a child’s growth is important because earlier treatment, such as expansion or protraction, can be more effective while the jaws are still growing.
Correction with aligners, braces and expansion
Treatment aims to create a normal overlap so the front teeth no longer meet tip to tip. In dental cases, Invisalign aligners or fixed braces can tip the upper incisors forward and the lower incisors back, often combined with resolving crowding. A narrow upper jaw may be widened — with a conventional expander in children or, in suitable adults, MARPE — to create space and improve the relationship. TADs can provide anchorage for more controlled movements. Worn edges may later be restored by a dentist once the bite is corrected. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Moaiyad Pacha explains the cause and the options in a written plan; contact the clinic for his Dubai dates.
It is never too late to straighten teeth. Adult orthodontics often works alongside implants, veneers or gum treatment, and discreet appliances fit professional life.

Is an edge-to-edge bite bad?
Not always, but it often leads to chipping and wear of the front teeth over time, so it is worth assessing.
Can Invisalign fix an edge-to-edge bite?
Many dental edge-to-edge bites can be corrected with aligners; skeletal cases may need expansion, braces or other approaches.
Will an edge-to-edge bite turn into an underbite?
In growing children it can be an early Class III sign; in adults it is often stable but should be monitored.
Can bonding fix chipped edges without orthodontics?
Bonding can repair chips, but if the bite stays edge-to-edge the restorations are likely to chip again.
How long does correction take?
It depends on the cause and severity; Dr. Pacha gives an estimate in your written plan after assessment.

Who treats an edge-to-edge bite in adults in Dubai?
Consultant orthodontist Dr. Moaiyad Pacha treats edge-to-edge bites at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, first determining whether the cause is dental, skeletal or a functional slide. Options include aligners, braces, expansion and TADs.
Why are my front teeth chipping and getting shorter when they meet end to end?
Front teeth that meet tip to tip strike directly and wear down over time; Dr. Moaiyad Pacha at Manhal Medical Center, Dubai, can correct the bite so edges are protected. Restoring chips without fixing the bite often leads to repeat damage.
What is the difference between an edge-to-edge bite and an underbite?
In an edge-to-edge bite the front teeth meet tip to tip, while in an underbite the lower teeth sit in front; Dr. Moaiyad Pacha at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai assesses where your bite falls. Treatment intensity depends on the skeletal difference.
Should my child’s edge-to-edge front teeth be checked by an orthodontist?
Yes; at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Moaiyad Pacha checks whether it signals a developing Class III pattern. Early treatment during growth can sometimes simplify later correction.
