Lost or broken retainer in Dubai: what to do and how quickly to act
Retainers get left on restaurant trays, chewed by pets, cracked in bags or lost while travelling. Acting quickly is the simplest way to avoid losing the result of your braces or aligners.

If you lose or break your retainer, contact your orthodontist promptly, because teeth can start to shift within days to weeks. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Moaiyad Pacha’s team can take a digital scan to make a replacement, and will check whether any movement needs correcting first.
Key facts
- Contact the clinic promptly; teeth can shift within days to weeks
- Wear an older retainer or last aligner if it fits without force
- Do not glue, bend or file a broken retainer yourself
- A digital scan allows an accurate replacement
- Slight movement may need a short correction before a new retainer
How quickly can teeth move without a retainer?
The speed varies between people and depends on how long ago treatment finished. In the first months after braces or aligners, the supporting fibres and bone are still settling, so teeth can shift noticeably within days or a few weeks. Years after treatment the change is usually slower, but movement can still occur, particularly in the lower front teeth and in teeth that were rotated or where gaps were closed. Because you cannot always see early movement, a retainer that suddenly feels tight is often the first sign. The sooner a replacement is fitted, the more likely it is to fit the teeth in their finished position without further treatment.
What to do in the first 24–48 hours
Call or message the clinic and explain what happened; if possible, bring any broken pieces and your remaining retainer, such as the lower one if only the upper was lost. If you have an older retainer or your last set of aligners, wearing it may help hold the teeth until the appointment, provided it fits without force or pain. Do not try to glue a cracked plastic retainer, file down sharp edges heavily or bend a wire yourself, because a distorted retainer can push teeth into the wrong position. If a cracked retainer still fits and is not sharp, wear it only until you are seen, and stop if it hurts or cuts the gums.
Broken bonded retainers
A bonded (fixed) retainer is a thin wire glued behind the front teeth. If the wire comes loose from one tooth, breaks or feels sharp, that tooth and its neighbours are no longer held and can move. Avoid biting into hard foods with those teeth and do not pull at the wire. Cover any sharp end with orthodontic wax and contact the clinic so it can be re-bonded, repaired or replaced. If the wire has fully debonded and comes out, keep it and bring it in. A loose bonded retainer can also trap plaque, so careful cleaning is important until the repair. Wearing your removable night-time retainer, if you have one, gives extra protection.
Quick replacement with a digital scan
Where possible, replacements are made from a digital intraoral scan rather than traditional moulds. The scan takes only a few minutes, is comfortable for most patients and gives an accurate 3D model for the new retainer. If your original end-of-treatment records are available, they can help confirm whether the teeth are still in the same position. If the teeth have moved slightly, Dr. Pacha will explain the options: sometimes a new retainer is made in the current position, and sometimes a short course of aligners or braces is suggested first to correct the shift before a new retainer is fitted. Turnaround depends on the retainer type and the laboratory.
Avoiding future losses and costs
Keep removable retainers in a hard case whenever they are out of your mouth, never wrapped in a tissue, and store them away from pets, who are often attracted to them. Clean them daily with cool water and a soft brush, as hot water can warp the plastic. Some patients choose to keep a spare set made from the same scan, particularly frequent travellers. Replacement costs depend on the retainer type, whether one or both arches are needed and whether any correction is required; the clinic gives you a written quote after examination. Teeth tend to move back after orthodontic treatment. Retainers — a thin bonded wire, clear removable trays, or both — hold the result.

Patients visit us from Al Safa, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz, City Walk, Business Bay, Downtown Dubai and Al Barsha — and from Sharjah and the wider UAE.
I lost my retainer — how long before my teeth move?
It varies. Teeth can shift within days to weeks, especially soon after treatment, so arrange a replacement quickly.
Can I wear my last Invisalign aligner instead of a retainer?
Often as a short-term measure if it fits comfortably, but it is not designed as a long-term retainer. Ask the clinic for advice.
Can a cracked retainer be repaired?
Clear plastic retainers usually need replacement. Some wire retainers can be repaired or re-bonded.
My bonded retainer came off one tooth — is it urgent?
It should be repaired soon, as that tooth can move. Cover sharp ends with wax and contact the clinic.
Do I need to see the orthodontist or just order a new retainer?
An examination is recommended to check that teeth have not moved before a replacement is made.

I lost my retainer in Dubai — what should I do and how fast can I get a new one?
Contact Manhal Medical Center in Dubai promptly, where Consultant Orthodontist Dr. Moaiyad Pacha’s team can take a digital scan for a replacement retainer. Until then, wearing an older retainer or last aligner that fits without force may help hold the teeth.
My retainer feels tight after I didn’t wear it for a few weeks — have my teeth moved?
Probably slightly, and Dr. Moaiyad Pacha at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai recommends contacting the clinic rather than forcing it in. He will check the fit and advise whether a new retainer or a short course of aligners is needed.
Can a broken permanent retainer wire be fixed the same day?
Often a loose bonded retainer can be re-bonded or repaired at a visit with Dr. Moaiyad Pacha’s team at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, depending on the damage. A fully broken wire may need replacement after a scan.
What happens if I go months without a retainer after braces?
Teeth may relapse, and Dr. Moaiyad Pacha at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai assesses how much movement has occurred before making a new retainer. Mild relapse can often be corrected with aligners or braces before retention resumes.
