Jaw clicking treatment in Dubai: why the jaw clicks and when it needs care
Hearing or feeling a click every time you yawn or chew can be unsettling, especially if friends can hear it too. Knowing when a click is harmless and when it signals a problem helps you decide whether to seek treatment.

Jaw clicking is usually caused by the cushioning disc inside the jaw joint slipping forward and popping back as the mouth opens and closes. Clicking without pain is common and often needs no treatment, but clicking with pain, locking or difficulty opening should be assessed; at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Consultant Orthodontist Dr. Moaiyad Pacha evaluates the joint and offers splints and bite correction where appropriate.
Key facts
- Most clicking comes from the joint disc slipping and recapturing
- Clicking without pain often needs only monitoring
- Pain, catching, locking or reduced opening need assessment
- CBCT shows bone; MRI by referral shows the disc
- Splints, self-care and bite correction are options when needed
Why the jaw clicks
Each temporomandibular joint has a small fibrous disc between the jaw bone and the skull that acts as a cushion. In a healthy joint the disc moves smoothly with the jaw. If the disc sits slightly too far forward, the jaw head may slip under it when opening, producing a click or pop as it recaptures the disc, and sometimes a second click on closing. This is called disc displacement with reduction. Other causes of joint noise include uneven joint surfaces, ligament laxity and, in older adults, wear-related changes that may cause grinding or crackling rather than a sharp click. Clenching, grinding, bite imbalances and previous injury can all contribute.
When clicking matters
Many people have a click without pain for years without it getting worse, and this often needs only monitoring and sensible habits. Clicking deserves assessment when it comes with pain in the joint or muscles, headaches, ear-area discomfort, a jaw that catches or briefly locks, or reduced opening. A sudden change from clicking to being unable to open fully, sometimes after the click stops, can mean the disc is no longer recapturing, called closed lock, and should be seen promptly. A jaw that locks open and cannot close is an urgent problem that needs immediate care. Changes in how your teeth meet alongside joint symptoms should also be checked.
How the joint is assessed
Dr. Pacha begins with a detailed history of the clicking, pain, locking and habits, then examines jaw movement, joint sounds, muscle tenderness, the bite and airway factors that may contribute to clenching. CBCT 3D imaging can show the bony parts of the joints and their position, and helps rule out other causes. Because CBCT does not show the soft-tissue disc well, MRI may be arranged through referral when the disc position matters for decisions, such as with locking or persistent pain. Findings are explained in plain terms, and any incidental findings outside orthodontics are flagged so they can be followed up with the appropriate doctor.
Treatment options
For painful or limiting clicking, treatment usually starts conservatively. Self-care includes soft foods during flare-ups, avoiding chewing gum and very wide yawning, and noticing daytime clenching. A custom occlusal splint, made from digital scans, may be used to reduce load on the joint and calm muscles; some patients need a paired day and night orthotic. Clicking does not always disappear even when pain improves, and pain and function are the main goals. If the bite does not support a comfortable jaw position once symptoms settle, orthodontic correction with braces, aligners, expansion or TADs may be discussed. Referral to other specialists is arranged when surgery or medical management needs to be considered.
Red flags and booking an assessment
Seek urgent care if your jaw locks open, if jaw pain comes with chest or arm pain or breathlessness, or if you have facial swelling with fever, numbness or a recent injury. Book an assessment if clicking becomes painful, the jaw catches or opening is reduced.
