The first days after surgery

Expect some swelling of the cheek, possibly reaching under the eye, peaking around day two or three, and sometimes bruising. A small amount of bleeding from the site or a blood-tinged discharge from the nose on that side can occur in the first days. Cold packs in the first 24 hours, sleeping with your head raised and taking prescribed medicines — which may include antibiotics, pain relief and a decongestant — as directed help comfort. Eat soft, cool food and chew on the other side. Do not rinse vigorously on the first day. Most people return to desk work within a few days, depending on the extent of surgery.

Nose-blowing, sneezing and pressure rules

The key rule is to avoid pressure changes in the sinus while the membrane heals. Do not blow your nose for about two weeks — gently wipe it instead. If you need to sneeze, do so with your mouth open to release pressure. Avoid drinking through straws, smoking or vaping, playing wind instruments, heavy lifting, bending forward for long periods and strenuous exercise in the first week or so. Do not pull your lip up to look at the stitches. These precautions reduce the risk of the membrane tearing or graft particles shifting. Your surgeon will tell you exactly how long each rule applies in your case.

Flying, diving and congestion

Changes in air pressure when flying or diving can push on the healing sinus. Air travel is commonly avoided for around one to two weeks after a sinus lift, and scuba diving for longer; always confirm timing with your surgeon, especially if you travel frequently for work. Mild stuffiness on the operated side is common and usually settles within days. Saline sprays or prescribed decongestants can help. If you have a cold, hay fever or sinus infection before the planned date, tell the clinic — surgery may be postponed until the sinus is healthy, as active sinus disease increases the risk of complications.

Warning signs to report

Contact the clinic promptly if you have bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure, swelling that keeps increasing after day three, fever, pus, a foul taste or smell from the nose, persistent pain not controlled by medication, or if you notice graft granules coming from your nose. Air or fluid passing between the mouth and nose when drinking or speaking should also be reported. Most sinus lifts heal without problems, but these signs can indicate infection or a membrane issue that is easier to manage when caught early. If you develop severe facial swelling, eye swelling with vision change or difficulty breathing, seek urgent care.

Healing months before the implant

The graft gradually matures into bone over the following months.
