Am I suitable for dental implants? Diabetes, smoking, age and bone
Many patients assume they are 'too old' or 'too diabetic' for implants. Suitability is decided individually, using medical history, gum health and a 3D scan.

Most adults with missing teeth can have implants if their general health is stable, gum disease is controlled and there is enough bone or it can be rebuilt. Controlled diabetes, older age and past smoking do not automatically rule implants out; uncontrolled conditions and some medicines need careful assessment.
Key facts
- No upper age limit
- Controlled diabetes usually suitable
- Smoking raises risk
- 3D scan + medical history decide
Medical conditions
Well-controlled diabetes is usually compatible with implants; recent blood results help. Some bone medicines and cancer treatments need discussion with your doctor.
Smoking
Smoking increases infection and failure risk. Stopping around surgery and healing improves outcomes.
Age and bone
There is no upper age limit. Bone quantity matters more, and grafting or angled implants can often compensate.
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a biocompatible titanium post that bonds with the jawbone. Once integrated, it supports a crown that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth, and it helps prevent the bone loss that follows an extraction.
