Dental implants for older adults — health checks, medicines and simpler options
Older adults and their families often ask whether it is ‘too late’ for implants, especially after years of a loose denture. The real questions are general health, medicines, bone, hand dexterity for cleaning and how much treatment the patient wants to go through.

Age alone does not rule out dental implants; many people in their 70s and 80s have them successfully when their general health is stable. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, older patients have a medical and medication review and a CBCT scan, and are often offered simpler options such as a two-implant overdenture instead of many implants.
Key facts
- No fixed upper age limit for implants
- Medical and medication review comes first
- Never stop blood thinners without your doctor’s advice
- Osteoporosis medicines are assessed individually
- Two-implant overdentures are often the simplest solution
Is there an upper age limit for implants?
There is no fixed upper age limit. Bone that has stopped growing is actually a stable base for implants, and healing in healthy older adults is often good, if sometimes a little slower. What matters more than the number of years is overall health: heart and lung condition, diabetes control, any history of head and neck radiotherapy, and the ability to attend a few appointments. Quality of life is a major consideration — a secure denture can make eating, speaking and socialising much easier, which is why implant treatment is frequently considered for patients well into their eighties. Each case is decided after examination.
Medical review before treatment
Before planning, the dentist asks for a full list of medical conditions and medicines, and may request a letter from the patient’s physician. Conditions that are well controlled — such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or past heart problems — often do not prevent treatment but may change timing or precautions. Recent heart attack or stroke, uncontrolled diabetes, active cancer treatment and some immune conditions usually mean waiting or choosing a non-surgical option. Simple blood tests may be suggested. The aim is to make treatment safe and short, using local anaesthesia and short appointments that suit the patient’s energy levels.
Blood thinners and bone (osteoporosis) medicines
Many older patients take anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines. These should never be stopped without the prescribing doctor’s advice; for most minor oral surgery they are continued and bleeding is controlled locally, but the dentist checks the specific medicine and recent test results. Bisphosphonates and some other medicines for osteoporosis or cancer can, rarely, affect jaw bone healing — a condition called medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. The risk depends on the drug, dose, route and duration. Tablets taken for osteoporosis carry a much lower risk than high-dose injections for cancer. Your surgeon weighs this carefully and explains it in writing.
Simpler options: overdentures and fewer implants
For many older patients the most sensible goal is not a fixed implant bridge but a denture that no longer moves. A lower denture clipped onto two implants is widely regarded as a practical standard for a loose lower denture, and an existing denture can sometimes be adapted to clip on. Fewer implants means shorter surgery, quicker recovery and easier cleaning. Where bone is very limited, shorter or narrower implants may be considered from the CBCT scan to avoid major grafting. Fixed full-arch options remain possible for fit patients who prefer them, but they require more surgery and more meticulous home care.
Cleaning, dexterity and long-term care
Implants need daily cleaning, and older hands or reduced eyesight can make that harder. Removable overdentures are often easier to keep clean than fixed bridges because the denture comes out and the implant tops can be brushed directly. Family members or carers can be shown how to help. Regular reviews — typically every six to twelve months — let the dentist check the clips, the gums around the implants and the fit of the denture. If a patient later moves into care or becomes less able to clean, a simple overdenture design is easier to manage than complex fixed work, which is an important part of planning.
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a biocompatible titanium post that bonds with the jawbone. Once integrated, it supports a crown that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth, and it helps prevent the bone loss that follows an extraction.

Am I too old for dental implants at 80?
Not necessarily. If your general health is stable and the examination and scan are favourable, implants can be considered; simpler designs are often preferred.
Do I need to stop my blood thinner?
Never stop it on your own. The dentist liaises with your doctor; many patients continue their medicine with local bleeding control.
I take an osteoporosis tablet — can I still have implants?
Often yes, after careful assessment. The risk depends on the medicine, dose and duration, and the surgeon explains it before treatment.
Can my existing denture be used with implants?
Sometimes an existing denture in good condition can be adapted to clip onto implants; otherwise a new one is made.
Is the surgery longer for older patients?
Not usually. Plans for older adults often aim for fewer implants and shorter appointments under local anaesthesia.

Can an 82-year-old with a loose lower denture get implants in Dubai?
Often yes — at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee and Dr. Moataz Al-Khan assess older patients with a medical review and CBCT scan rather than ruling them out by age. A common solution is a lower denture that clips onto two implants, which usually means shorter surgery and easier cleaning. Suitability depends on general health and bone.
My father takes blood thinners and osteoporosis medicine — is implant surgery safe for him?
It can be, after careful assessment by Dr. Manhal Helfawee or Dr. Moataz Al-Khan at Manhal Medical Center, Dubai. They review the exact medicines and may liaise with his physician; blood thinners are not stopped without medical advice, and the jaw-healing risk from osteoporosis medicines depends on the drug, dose and duration. The plan and risks are explained in writing.
What is the easiest implant option for elderly people who struggle with dentures?
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee often discusses a two-implant overdenture as the simplest option for older adults with a loose lower denture. The denture snaps onto the implants for stability but still comes out for cleaning. Fixed bridges are possible for fit patients but need more surgery and care.
How many visits does an older patient need for implant overdentures?
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee and Dr. Moataz Al-Khan usually plan a consultation with CBCT, the implant surgery, a healing period of a few months and then visits to connect the denture. The exact number depends on whether a new denture is needed. Appointments can be kept short for comfort.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staffAmazing service and very friendly team I'm very happy with my dental implant results with Dr.Manhal ❤️
