Implant or root canal? Saving a tooth vs replacing it
This is one of the most common decisions patients face with a painful tooth. Neither option is 'always better' — the condition of the tooth decides.

When a tooth is infected but restorable, root canal treatment with a crown keeps your natural tooth and is usually the first choice. An implant is considered when the tooth is cracked below the gum, has too little structure left, or has a poor long-term outlook.
Key facts
- Restorable tooth → root canal first
- Cracked or unrestorable → implant
- Root canal: weeks; implant: months
- Decision made after X-rays/3D scan
When saving the tooth makes sense
Enough healthy tooth structure, no vertical root fracture, healthy gum and bone support, and a restorable crown afterwards.
When an implant is better
Vertical cracks, very little remaining tooth, repeated failed treatments or severe bone loss around the tooth.
Time and cost
A root canal and crown take a few weeks; an implant takes months. Costs depend on the case; your dentist compares both.
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a biocompatible titanium post that bonds with the jawbone. Once integrated, it supports a crown that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth, and it helps prevent the bone loss that follows an extraction.

Not automatically; keeping a healthy, restorable natural tooth is usually preferred.
Can a root-canal-treated tooth later be replaced with an implant?
Yes, if it fails in future.
Which is less painful?
Both are done under local anaesthetic; recovery is usually mild.
Does a root canal need a crown?
