Loose dentures solutions — from relines and adhesive to implant clip-in dentures
A loose denture can make eating, speaking and smiling stressful, and many people quietly put up with it for years or rely on more and more adhesive. There is usually a solution, ranging from a simple adjustment to implants.

Dentures usually loosen because the jawbone and gums shrink after teeth are lost, so the denture no longer fits closely. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee works through the options — adjustment, reline, a new denture or implant clip-in dentures — according to how much the fit has changed and what you want.
Key facts
- Bone shrinkage after tooth loss is the main cause
- Needing more adhesive signals a reline is due
- Relines refit a denture in good condition
- Worn or old dentures usually need replacing
- Two implants can stop a lower denture moving
Why dentures become loose
When natural teeth are removed, the bone that held their roots is no longer stimulated and gradually resorbs. This process is fastest in the first months after extraction but continues slowly for life, and it is usually more marked in the lower jaw. As the ridge flattens, a denture that once fitted snugly begins to rock and lift. Weight changes, dry mouth from medicines, worn denture teeth and changes in the cheeks and tongue can add to the problem. Upper dentures rely on suction against the palate, so even small gaps can break the seal. Lower dentures have far less surface to grip and are pushed by the tongue.
Denture adhesive: pros and cons
Adhesive can improve retention and confidence for a well-fitting denture, especially for social occasions, and is reasonable to use in small amounts. However, it should not be used to make up for a denture that no longer fits: needing more and more adhesive is a sign that a reline or new denture is due. Excessive use can trap food and bacteria, irritate the gums and make cleaning harder. Some older adhesive products contained zinc, which with very heavy long-term use has been associated with health concerns, so follow the product instructions and remove all residue daily. Ask your dentist if you rely on adhesive every day.
Adjustment, reline or new denture
If a denture is relatively new and the change is small, adjustments to the fitting surface or bite may be enough. When the gums have shrunk but the denture teeth and base are in good condition, a reline adds new material inside the denture so it fits the current shape of your gums again. A soft reline may help tender gums. If the denture teeth are worn, the bite has dropped, the denture is old or has been repaired many times, a new denture with fresh impressions and bite records is usually the better solution. A well-made new denture can make a significant difference even without implants.
Implant clip-in dentures
When a lower denture remains loose despite a good fit, or when someone simply wants it to stop moving, implants are the most effective solution. Two implants at the front of the lower jaw can allow the denture to clip on using small attachments; existing dentures can sometimes be converted. In the upper jaw, four implants may allow a denture that clips on and leaves the palate uncovered. For people who prefer teeth that do not come out, fixed implant bridges are an option. Implant treatment requires a medical review, CBCT scan to check bone, minor surgery under local anaesthesia and a healing period of a few months.
Choosing the right solution
The right option depends on how loose the denture is, the condition of the denture, how much bone is left, your general health and your priorities around cost, surgery and convenience. At your consultation, Dr. Manhal Helfawee checks the fit, bite, gums and denture condition, and may take a CBCT scan if implants are being considered. Any sore spots, ulcers or fungal infection under the denture are treated first. You receive a written plan with options and their costs after examination. Persistent ulcers that do not heal within about two weeks should always be examined, regardless of the denture fit.
Modern dentures are designed for fit, bite and appearance. When a lower denture moves, two or more implants can hold it in place with click-in attachments.

Why is my denture loose when it used to fit?
The bone and gums under it shrink over time after tooth loss, so the fit gradually changes.
Is it bad to use denture adhesive every day?
Small amounts are fine with a good fit, but daily dependence usually means the denture needs relining or replacing.
Can a loose denture be fixed without implants?
Often yes, with an adjustment, reline or new denture; implants give the most stability if those are not enough.
Why is my lower denture looser than my upper?
Lower dentures have less surface area, no palate suction and are pushed by the tongue.
Can my current denture be attached to implants?
Sometimes, if it fits well and is in good condition; otherwise a new denture is made.

What can I do about a loose denture in Dubai without getting a whole new set?
At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Manhal Helfawee often starts with adjustments or a reline when the denture is in good condition, which refits it to your current gums. If it is worn or still loose, a new denture or implant clip-in options are discussed.
Is denture adhesive a long-term solution for loose dentures?
Not really — Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai explains that adhesive can help a well-fitting denture, but needing more every day means the fit has changed and a reline or new denture is due. Heavy use can also irritate the gums.
How do implants fix a loose lower denture?
Two implants placed at the front of the lower jaw let the denture clip on with small attachments, stopping it lifting and sliding, explains Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai. It still comes out for cleaning, and suitability is checked with a CBCT scan.
Why do dentures get loose over time even if they were made well?
The jawbone shrinks after teeth are lost, so even an excellent denture gradually loses its fit, says Dr. Manhal Helfawee at Manhal Medical Center in Dubai. Regular reviews let him reline or remake the denture before it becomes a problem.

Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staffAmazing service and very friendly team I'm very happy with my dental implant results with Dr.Manhal ❤️
