Xanthelasma removal in Dubai — yellow eyelid plaques, cholesterol check and treatment
Xanthelasma usually start near the inner corner of the upper or lower eyelids and slowly enlarge, sometimes on both sides. People seek treatment mainly for appearance, but the plaques also deserve a look at overall cardiovascular health.

Xanthelasma are soft, flat yellowish plaques on or around the eyelids made of cholesterol-rich deposits; they are harmless in themselves but can be a sign of raised blood lipids, so a cholesterol check is usually advised. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, specialist dermatologist Dr. Abdullah Anis assesses the plaques and discusses removal options such as CO2 laser or other methods suited to the delicate eyelid skin.
Key facts
- Xanthelasma are cholesterol-rich eyelid deposits
- A lipid profile is advised, even if you feel well
- Options: CO2 laser, TCA, cautery or excision
- Plaques can return, especially if lipids stay high
- Eyelid skin needs careful technique to avoid scarring
What xanthelasma are
Xanthelasma palpebrarum are collections of fat-laden cells in the skin of the eyelids. They appear as soft, painless, yellow or orange flat or slightly raised patches, most often near the inner corners of the eyes. They usually grow slowly and do not affect vision or eyelid function. They are more common in middle age and in women, and they can run in families. About half of people with xanthelasma have normal cholesterol levels, but in others the plaques are linked with raised LDL cholesterol, other lipid disorders, diabetes, thyroid or liver conditions. They are not infectious and do not turn into cancer, though a dermatologist will confirm the diagnosis.
Why a cholesterol check comes first
Because xanthelasma can be a visible sign of a lipid disorder, it is sensible to have a fasting or non-fasting lipid profile and, where appropriate, blood sugar and thyroid tests, especially if you have never been checked or have a family history of early heart disease. Some studies have linked xanthelasma with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease even when cholesterol is normal, so your general practitioner or physician may also review blood pressure, smoking and other risk factors. Treating raised cholesterol is important for your health but usually does not make existing plaques disappear, so removal is considered separately. Dr. Abdullah Anis can advise which tests to arrange.
Removal options for eyelid plaques
The choice of method depends on the size, depth and number of plaques, how close they are to the eyelid margin and your skin type. Options the dermatologist may discuss include CO2 laser ablation, which removes the plaque layer by layer with good control; topical chemical treatment with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) applied in small amounts; electrocautery for small lesions; or surgical excision for larger, deeper plaques, sometimes by an eyelid surgeon. The eyelid skin is very thin, so the aim is to remove the deposit while preserving eyelid shape and minimising scarring or pigment change. More than one session may be needed.
Recovery, results and recurrence
After treatment, the area may be red, swollen or crusted for one to two weeks, and you should avoid rubbing your eyes and protect the skin from sun. Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin is possible and is more likely in darker skin types; it usually fades over months. Xanthelasma can return after any method of removal, particularly when lipid levels remain raised or when the plaques were large or multiple. Managing cholesterol, not smoking and attending follow-up help reduce the chance of recurrence, and small new spots are often easier to treat early.
When to see a doctor and how Manhal can help
See a doctor if yellow patches appear around your eyes, especially at a young age, because the lipid check is worthwhile in its own right. Seek prompt review for any eyelid lesion that bleeds, ulcerates, grows quickly, causes loss of eyelashes or distorts the eyelid, as other conditions can affect this area. Do not apply acids or removal creams at home near the eyes. At Manhal Medical Center in Dubai, Dr. Abdullah Anis examines the plaques, advises on blood tests and discusses whether CO2 laser or another method is appropriate for you, in English or Arabic.
Most skin tags and moles are harmless, but anything changing should be checked before removal. With a background in dermatopathology, our dermatologist assesses lesions before choosing laser, shave or excision.

Is xanthelasma dangerous?
The plaques themselves are harmless, but they can be associated with high cholesterol or cardiovascular risk, which is why a blood test is recommended.
Will lowering my cholesterol remove xanthelasma?
Usually not completely. Managing cholesterol is important for health and may reduce recurrence, but existing plaques often need removal.
Does laser removal leave a scar?
CO2 laser offers precise control, but any method on the eyelid carries some risk of scarring or pigment change, which is discussed beforehand.
How many sessions are needed?
Small plaques may need one session; larger or deeper ones often need more than one. The doctor estimates this after examination.
Can xanthelasma come back?
Yes, recurrence is fairly common after any treatment, particularly with raised lipids or multiple plaques.

Reasonable price and great location. Great experience so far I had my laser done and very happy with the result. So I decided to purchase another package :)Like many people, I don't enjoy the dentist. For many years I avoided visits out of fear. I found Manhal 15 years ago, and he is a wonderful dentist. Calming presence. Excellent implantology as well as other dental work. I have recommended him personally to many friends, and will continue to do so. I just hope he doesn't ever retire. When I have been overseas with dental problems, I have flown back to Dubai specifically to see him. Could not imagine ever going to another dentist.this was my first visit to Dr Manhal after recomendation from my husband, i needed his consultation after i visited more than one doctor in Lebanon with no luck, i am glad i visited him, he is very professional the clinic is very clean with great staff
